Manchester United have announced the deadline day signing of Spanish Women's World Cup winner Irene Guerrero from Atletico Madrid.

Guerrero was a member of the triumphant squad that overcame England in the final Down Under this summer.

The midfielder has previously featured for Real Betis and Levante but this is her first move outside Spain.

She said: "I feel very happy and very privileged to be here.

"I am very proud to be part of the Manchester United family and look forward to achieving all our goals together."

United fell only two points short of Chelsea in the Women's Super League title race last season and will be aiming to go one better this time around.

And boss Marc Skinner is delighted to sign a player of such pedigree ahead of the 2023-24 campaign.

He said: "Irene is a World Cup winner whose quality is an excellent addition to our team.

"The experience she brings, both domestically and internationally, will be key as we pursue success across the multiple competitions we face this season.

"We are delighted to bring a player of Irene's stature to Manchester United."

United's head of women's football Polly Bancroft was equally thrilled to get the club's new recruit over the line.

She said: "Irene's signing is the latest example of the ambition of Manchester United.

"We cannot wait to see her pull on our famous red shirt and entertain our magnificent fans, at home and in Europe."

Guerrero's new side kick off their WSL campaign at Aston Villa on Sunday, October 1.
