Mal Benning’s decisive penalty in the shoot-out confirmed Shrewsbury’s place in the second round of the Carabao Cup after a frantic 3-3 draw with Notts County in ordinary time.

The Magpies made a blistering start as they broke the deadlock within the opening five minutes.

David McGoldrick floated a cross to the back post for Jodi Jones to lay it back into the box for Conor Grant to head in.

Notts County doubled their lead midway through the first half. Jack Hinchy played a lovely through ball to McGoldrick, who squared it for Sam Austin to tap home.

Shrewsbury pressed high and caught County knapping in the 68th minute, with Josh Kayode latching on to a back pass and taking it around Sam Slocombe.

The hosts found the leveller four minutes later thanks to a Tommi O’Reilly sensational cross to the back post, which Jordan Shipley managed to head home.

Shrewsbury completed the comeback and went ahead when Jordan Rossiter whipped a dangerous cross into the box with just six minutes remaining, which Shipley headed home for his brace.

But the Magpies did not give up and pulled level in the 89th minute through Alassana Jatta, who nodded in a Dan Crowley corner.

Shrewsbury advanced to the next round after winning 4-3 on penalties after McGoldrick and Curtis Edwards missed for Notts County.
