Arteta extends Arsenal stay

Mikel Arteta has signed a new deal at Arsenal which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

The 40-year-old Spaniard has guided the Gunners within touching distance of a first top-four finish in six years this term, which would in turn secure Champions League qualification.

Arteta said: "I'm excited, grateful and really, really happy today.

"When I spoke to Josh [Kroenke], he could see the club at the same point and he wanted to take the club the way I wanted to do it.

"So everything that he’s said and that Stan [Kroenke] has said when I’ve been together with both of them, they’ve always delivered.

"We want to take the club to the next level and to compete really with the top teams. In order to do that, we have to be playing in the Champions League.

"We have to be able to evolve the team, improve our players, improve all departments, generate even more connection with our fans, improve the atmosphere at the Emirates, be able to recruit top, top talent and the best people for this club to drive this project to that level."

The Gunners also confirmed their women’s manager Jonas Eidevall has reached an agreement on a new two-year contract.

Eidevall's side could still snatch the WSL title if they better the result of leaders Chelsea in the season’s final round of fixtures this weekend.

Arteta meanwhile will hope to mastermind victory at home to Leeds on Sunday afternoon.

Lundstram revels in 'greatest night'

Rangers matchwinner John Lundstram admitted his side’s stunning Europa League semi-final victory over RB Leipzig is the greatest achievement of his career.

The former Sheffield United midfielder, 28, smashed home in the final 10 minutes to seal a remarkable 3-2 aggregate victory over the Bundesliga outfit last night.

The famous victory booked the Gers a place in the Seville showpiece in 12 days’ time, where they will face another German opponent in Eintracht Frankfurt who defeated West Ham 3-1 on aggregate.

Lundstram said: "I came in with a good feeling. Look at the place! But to actually go out and do it, I can't put it into words.

"We've been through so many ups and downs this season but to come through it and reach a Europa League final, wow.

"It's my best night by a country mile."

Lifting the trophy on May 18 would also earn Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men a spot in next year’s Champions League group stage.

Salah eyeing Madrid revenge

Mohamed Salah has labelled Liverpool’s Champions League final showdown with Real Madrid as "revenge time".

The Reds will meet Los Blancos in Paris on May 28 in a repeat of the 2018 final, which the LaLiga outfit won 3-1 thanks to a Karim Benzema strike and Gareth Bale’s brilliant brace.

Salah, who was forced off in the first half of that previous meeting with a dislocated shoulder, is hoping for a different outcome four years on.

The Egyptian, 29, said: "I'm so excited, I said before the game that I wanted to play Madrid in the final.

"We lost in the 2018 final, it was a sad day for all of us and I think it is revenge time.

"I'm sure it is going to be a tough game, they beat a lot of good teams so we just need to focus on the game."

Rangnick refutes Lingard claims

Jesse Lingard was not afforded an Old Trafford farewell by Ralf Rangnick

Ralf Rangnick has defended his decision to not bring on Jesse Lingard in Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat of Brentford — a move the player’s brother described as "classless" on social media.

Lingard, 29, is widely expected to leave Old Trafford this summer and his sibling Louie Scott was scathing in his criticism of United in an Instagram post earlier this week.

Juan Mata and Phil Jones, also both expected to depart next month, featured but Lingard was overlooked for a late cameo in favour of Edinson Cavani.

Yet Rangnick, 63, insists it was nothing personal.

The German said: "With only three substitutes, I had to take a decision between Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard, or young [Alejandro] Garnacho, who I would have loved to have brought on and given a chance to play.

"I took the decision to bring on Edinson. Had I not brought on Edinson someone else might have asked if it's classless not to bring on Cavani or Garnacho.

"You have to take a decision and this will not be to the liking of everybody and this is part of the game."

The Red Devils head to Brighton tomorrow evening before finishing off an underwhelming campaign at Crystal Palace on May 22.
