Digne Vill join Stevie G

Aston Villa are leading the race to sign Everton outcast Lucas Digne.

Toffees boss Rafa Benitez is happy for the French left-back to move on this month and Villa are reportedly in advanced negotiations to tie up a deal.

Digne, 28, has also been linked with Chelsea, Newcastle and West Ham.

But it appears he is destined to play under Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard at Villa Park.

Tuchel happy to call Saul

Thomas Tuchel insists Saul Niguez can become an important player for Chelsea as they battle for glory on all fronts.

The 27-year-old midfielder, on loan from Atletico Madrid, impressed as the Blues beat Chesterfield 5-1 in the FA Cup third round at the weekend.

And Tuchel was happy to see him shine. The Blues boss said: "I think he will be an important player for us — and I hope so as well.

"I see more confidence in him with each game, he is in good shape and his adaptation to the way we play has gone further from before.

"You can see this in his game now. He is more open, he understands the language better now and these are all important things to consider when talking about Saul and how much he has improved recently.

"He is having much more impact on games than he was at the beginning of the season."

Arteta tears into Gunners

Mikel Arteta told his Arsenal troops to apologise yesterday after they crashed out of the FA Cup third round at Nottingham Forest.

The below-par Gunners were sunk by Lewis Grabban's late strike at the City Ground — leaving their boss fuming.

Arteta said: "We were not good enough and we have to apologise for it.

"I don't want to use excuses, I expect the team I put out to do better and when you don't in the Cup you are out.

"We didn't put in the level to win the game. It's a collective issue and we have not done it.

"What we have done is nowhere near the level and standards required."

Arrests made following Cup clash

A number of supporters have been arrested following Crystal Palace's 2-1 win at Millwall in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.

One Lions fan has been arrested for alleged discriminatory abuse, two more for assaulting stewards and another for a pitch incursion at The Den.

A Palace supporter has been arrested for use of pyrotechnics, while two people have been identified by CCTV in relation to missile throwing, one of which struck Eagles star Michael Olise.

Millwall are still reviewing footage and the club expect to identify more individuals for throwing objects.

Ralf Rangnick was full of praise for Edinson Cavani after revealing the veteran striker had pledged to stick around at Manchester United.

Cavani, 34, has made just eight appearances in the Premier League this season and it was widely expected he would look to move on during the January sales.

But Rangnick has calmed talk of the Uruguayan quitting Old Trafford before his deal expires at the end of the season.

United's interim boss said: "He came to my office and we spoke for almost half an hour and he told me he will definitely stay. He wants to stay until the end of the season.

"He told me I can rely on him to stay until the end of the season, give his very best and be a role model for the young players.

"He's available and he's happy to play. Even if he's not playing, he will be trying to be the best possible role model for the other players."
