Talk of the Toon
Fabian Schar has signed a new two-year deal with Newcastle.
The Switzerland international has been a key part of Eddie Howe's side this season, playing the full 90 minutes in 22 of the former Bournemouth manager's 24 games in charge of the Toon.
Centre-back Schar, 30, said: "I'm absolutely delighted. It’s what I always wanted — to stay here to play for this unbelievable club.
"Since my first day in Newcastle, I felt so comfortable. It’s like a second home and now to stay here for some more years, I’m delighted."
Howe added: "I've been delighted with Fabian's form. He is the ultimate professional and a hugely important player in our dressing room.
"I'm delighted he has committed himself to the club. He is very driven for future success and I’m pleased he will be a part of our future."
Do not expect miracles
Rio Ferdinand has warned the Manchester United faithful not to expect new boss Erik ten Hag to deliver instant success.
United's woes have continued since Ralf Rangnick was brought in as interim manager following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier this season.
And as highly as he rates Ten Hag's achievements with Ajax, Ferdinand believes there is a long road ahead for him to transform his new club's fortunes.
The former United defender, 43, said: "Personally, I don’t think a manager will be the answer.
"It's going to have to be a collective fight and bringing all of the components and players together around the management and recruitment.
"Recruitment especially, that's going to need sorting out, but the culture at the football club has to be improved and changed."
Ten Hag, 52, will pick up the reins from Rangnick at the end of the season.
England have a new home
England's Nations League, Euro qualifiers and international fixtures will be live on Channel 4 until 2024.
The free-to-air TV station is scheduled to broadcast six Three Lions matches this year, kicking off with the clash against Hungary in Budapest on June 4.
Channel 4’s chief content officer Ian Katz said: "After bringing some of the biggest sporting moments of last year to the nation, I’m delighted Channel 4 will be airing so many mouth-watering England matches on free-to-air TV.
"This deal shows Channel 4 can compete for some of the biggest properties in sport and will bring substantial new audiences to our award-winning slate of original programming."
James: We deserved more
Reece James was disappointed Chelsea failed to come away from Old Trafford with three points last night.
James, 22, impressed as the Blues dominated Manchester United throughout the 1-1 draw.
The visitors attempted 21 shots but only had Marcos Alonso's fine volley on the hour mark to show for their efforts, with the Spaniard's goal cancelled out two minutes later by Cristiano Ronaldo.
James said: "We had enough chances to put the game to bed in the first half but we didn't take them. We scored and then they got one soon after.
"We had more chances in the second half but again we didn’t take them. They’re a great side and they managed to take two points from us."
Crowd trouble
West Ham have identified two people responsible for the alleged attack on two German commentators during last night's Europa League clash with Eintracht Frankfurt.
German paper Bild reported the broadcasters had their headsets ripped off and thrown to the floor at the London Stadium.
The incident took place after Michail Antonio equalised for the Hammers in the first leg of their semi-final, which they went on to lose 2-1.
A West Ham spokesperson said: "In line with our zero-tolerance approach, the offenders' details have been passed to the police, who will now conduct their own investigation.
"If the offenders are found guilty, they will be given an indefinite ban and not be permitted to enter London Stadium, nor travel with the club.
"Behaviour of this kind is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at West Ham."
No Small feat
Jose Mourinho was delighted with Chris Smalling's performance as Roma secured a 1-1 draw at Leicester in the first leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final.
The Portuguese tactician said: "He was fantastic, along with [Gianluca] Mancini.
"To play against [Jamie] Vardy the way we did, Smalling is playing so, so well."
Roma opened the scoring after 15 minutes last night through Lorenzo Pellegrini but were pegged back when Mancini put the ball into his own net midway through the second half.
Mourinho added: "I'm happy with the players but a little bit frustrated as we could've had more of the ball in the second half."
Earache
Midfielder Mark Shelton has been ruled out Hartlepool's League Two clash at Scunthorpe tomorrow — after falling foul of a cotton bud.
Boss Graeme Lee said: "Mark had a cotton bud in his ear and it’s gone too far.
"He’s gone to the hospital and it sounds like the doctor has put the tweezers in too far and he’s dizzy. He can’t stand up."
