Liverpool got their season up and running in sensational style when they hammered Bournemouth 9-0 on Saturday and they will now look to follow up at Anfield against Newcastle.

Jurgen Klopp's side were slow out of the blocks this season but they eventually recorded their first win at the fourth time of asking.

Newcastle are unbeaten in all five competitive matches they have played, including a 2-1 success over Tranmere Rovers in the EFL Cup.

Team news

Liverpool's injury list is a problem for Klopp, as the Reds are without Diogo Jota, Joel Matip, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ibrahima Konate, Calvin Ramsay, Curtis Jones and Naby Keita.

Jones and Matip at least returned to training on Tuesday but it seems unlikely either will be involved against the Magpies.

Darwin Nunez is still suspended after his red card against Crystal Palace earlier this month but Harvey Elliott should be available after shaking off a knock he sustained at the weekend.

Newcastle are still waiting for record-signing Alexander Isak to receive his work permit but the club are working hard behind the scenes in the hope he will be allowed to feature at Anfield.

Newcastle's treatment room is also busy and sadly for boss Eddie Howe, the injuries are all to first-team stars.

Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson missed the 1-1 draw with Wolves on Sunday, while Allan Saint-Maximin limped off after scoring the equalising goal.

All three are major doubts for the trip to Anfield, while Jonjo Shelvey and Emil Krafth are long-term absentees.

The stats

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 26 Premier League home matches against Newcastle, with their previous defeat in this fixture at Anfield coming in 1994.

The Magpies are winless in 11 Premier League matches against Liverpool, while the Reds have scored more Premier League goals (109) against Newcastle than they have against any other opponent.

Mohamed Salah surprisingly failed to find the back of the net against Bournemouth but he has an excellent record against the Magpies.

The Egypt international has scored in the last five home matches against Newcastle and he has what it takes to punish Howe's side in midweek.

Prediction

Even though Newcastle's start to the season has been strong, their chances of victory without attacking trio Guimaraes, Wilson and Saint-Maximin are incredibly slim.

Howe's side looked a little toothless up front without Wilson against Wolves last time out, and that should bode well for Liverpool as they look to record successive clean sheets.

Liverpool have not conceded in two of their last four matches against the Magpies, and they should have enough quality to win to nil again on Wednesday.

Newcastle are likely to sit back and try to hit the hosts on the counter-attack like Crystal Palace managed with some success earlier this month.

However, Howe has limited options up front due to injuries and his side are set to be on the wrong end of a result for the first time this season.
