For the second Matchday running, English clubs enjoyed mixed fortunes in the Champions League.

Newcastle and Manchester City claimed vital victories but Manchester United and Arsenal both slipped up.

We take a look at all the key talking points from another thrilling round of European action.

Flying Magpies

Champions League football returned to St James' Park for the first time in 20 years — and Newcastle delivered the goods.

Eddie Howe's side thrashed a disjointed Paris Saint-Germain, with local lads Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff striking either side of half-time.

Miguel Almiron got the ball rolling in the 17th minute with a wonderful first-time finish, before Fabian Schar completed the scoring in second-half stoppage time.

The Magpies' performance on home soil was so good that barely anyone will remember Lucas Hernandez's glancing header from Warren Zaire-Emery's lovely lofted pass.

United's woes

Manchester United suffered their second Champions League defeat of the season — and sixth in all competitions — as Galatasaray secured a 3-2 comeback win at Old Trafford.

A Rasmus Hojlund brace either side of a deflected effort from Wilfried Zaha looked to have the Red Devils on course for victory.

But a 71st-minute equaliser from Kerem Akturkoglu was followed by a Casemiro red card and a winning strike from Mauro Icardi, who capitalised on some more suspect goalkeeping from Andre Onana and made up for his penalty miss.

It was Onana's misplaced pass that led to the spot-kick being awarded, with Casemiro bringing down Dries Mertens and picking up a second booking.

United sit rock bottom of Group A after their 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich on Matchday 1.

Supersubs

Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku came off the bench to earn an important victory for City at RB Leipzig.

The young forwards entered the fray late in the second half at 1-1 after Lois Openda had cancelled out Phil Foden's opener with the the hosts' first and only shot on target.

Alvarez made it 2-1 just five minutes after coming on with yet another sumptuous strike assisted by Doku and the roles reversed in the 92nd minute as the Belgian winger finished off a sweeping City counter-attack.

Misfiring Gunners

Arsenal suffered a first defeat of the campaign as Lens came from a goal down to win 2-1.

Gabriel Jesus continued his fine Champions League record by bagging a first-half opener but the French outfit responded magnificently.

Adrien Thomasson scored a superb equaliser 11 minutes later, before summer signing Elye Wahi fired home the winner after the break.

It was a night to forget for Mikel Arteta's side, especially as talisman Bukayo Saka left the field with an injury in just the 34th minute.
