When does the January transfer window open across Europe?

The January transfer window is just around the corner and clubs are readying themselves to spend big.

Whether it be to replace injured stars, fix issues, or just hand a mid-season boost to the team, many sides are set for a busy month to get deals done before the deadline.

So when can clubs start doing business? And how long have they got to get contracts signed before the window slams shut?

With dates and times for all of Europe’s top leagues as well as what to look out for, our January transfer window explainer tells you all you need to know.

When does the January transfer window open?

The January transfer window opens on Saturday, January 1, 2022 for clubs in England and Scotland.

The Bundesliga and Ligue 1 windows will also kick off on the same day.

Elsewhere in Europe, Serie A and LaLiga will start their business two days later on the following Monday.

When does the window close?

The mid-season window will close on Monday, January 31 at 11pm GMT for all leagues in the United Kingdom and major European divisions.

Premier League teams can conclude moves for two hours after that deadline if they submit a deal sheet before that 11pm cut-off.

What to look out for

Newcastle are expected to be one of the Premier League’s big spenders as their wealthy new owners look to save the Magpies from a disastrous relegation.

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Tottenham could be busy as their respective new managers look to build squads which suit their philosophies.

United trio Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Donny van de Beek could all leave the club in January, while the future of Dele Alli is also expected to be a talking point.

The future of in-demand striker Erling Haaland could finally be resolved, plus Kylian Mbappe, Paul Pogba and Antonio Rudiger will all be free to discuss pre-contract terms with clubs.
