In Focus: The records Haaland could break in his debut campaign at City
Erling Haaland made an eye-catching start to Premier League life with two goals on his Manchester City debut against West Ham.
The 22-year-old striker has been the standout signing of the summer after a sensational record at previous club Borussia Dortmund.
Following his explosive start, many are predicting the Norwegian to send plenty of top-flight goalscoring records tumbling during his maiden campaign.
We look at which ones Haaland could break this term ahead of their clash with Bournemouth.
Most goals in a single Premier League campaign — 32 (38-game season)
Mohamed Salah’s 32 goals during the 2017-18 season, his first in Liverpool colours, is the best haul from a campaign with 20 teams competing.
It is a record that the Egyptian could challenge this term, but one Haaland would certainly fancy having a crack at beating.
Both Alan Shearer and Andy Cole have managed 34 goals in one Premier League season but that was when there were 22 teams.
Haaland will have four fewer games to beat those tallies but with chances sure to be in abundance in Pep Guardiola’s side, do not write off the Norwegian.
Most goals in a debut Premier League campaign — 30
Reaching that would also see him become the record scorer in a debut campaign in the Premier League, currently held by Kevin Phillips for his tally for Sunderland in the 1999-00 season.
Alongside Niall Quinn up front, the striker managed 30 for Peter Reid’s newly-promoted Black Cats to help them to a surprise seventh-place finish.
Eclipsing or even equalling that would undoubtedly represent a worthy introduction to English football for Haaland.
Most hat-tricks in a single Premier League campaign — five
If any of these high figures are achievable, there are bound to be some hat-trick performances thrown in there along the way.
That could see him claim another record, though he is up against the Premier League’s greatest ever No9 for this one.
Legendary striker Alan Shearer bagged a stunning five hat-tricks for Blackburn during the 1995-96 season, accounting for almost half of the 31 goals he scored overall.
Lower down the list, Harry Kane will have eyes on beating the four he netted for Tottenham in 2016-17.
Haaland's predecessor at City Sergio Aguero claimed an impressive three in two different seasons during 2017-18 and 2018-19.
Most consecutive games scored in during a single Premier League season — 11
Scoring streaks are like gold dust for any Premier League striker and after netting on his debut, maintaining his form in front of goal is the next task for City’s frontman.
Perhaps not even Jamie Vardy envisaged the 13 goals in 11 straight games he scored for Leicester during their memorable Premier League title-winning 2015-16 season.
His finish against Manchester United saw him overtake Ruud van Nistelrooy’s previous run of 10 games, with Daniel Sturridge (eight), Shearer (seven) and Joe Willock (seven) the nearest challengers.
Most goals in a single Premier League match — five
Five players have scored five goals in a single game in the history of the Premier League. Could Haaland become the first ever double hat-trick scorer?
That esteemed list is another to include Shearer, Aguero and Cole — with Dimitar Berbatov and Jermain Defoe joining them.
Becoming the sixth to do it would be an achievement in itself but following his match-winning debut at the London Stadium, dominant individual performances will surely be on the agenda.
