Bruno Fernandes looked back to his brilliant best as Manchester United overcame Nottingham Forest last weekend.

After some criticism for a below-par display against Tottenham, the Portugal international responded immediately — impressing as the Red Devils came from behind to secure a valuable 3-2 victory.

Ahead of United's clash with Arsenal, we take a look at why Fernandes remains a key man in midfield for Erik ten Hag's team.

Top performance

No player had more shots than Fernandes' six in United's 3-2 win over Forest.

He forced goalkeeper Matt Turner into two good saves and scored the penalty that put his side in front after going two goals down early in the game.

Fernandes also provided an assist — nodding a header into the path of Casemiro to convert — and created two big chances.

With a team-high four attempted take-ons and 25 completed final third passes, he was at the heart of everything United did in attack.

Leading by example

Ten Hag was full of praise for Fernandes, who has also taken on the captain's armband this season.

He said: "In all aspects he played a very good game, at the highest level, keeping his composure, controlling his emotions.

"He was great in attack, he made the difference, so I'm very happy with his performance.

"He showed why we pick him as a leader and a captain.

"He is a brilliant captain, by example, an inspiration. He brings the quality, keeps going. I think he played a very impressive game."

Influential

Despite suggestions that Fernandes had started the season poorly, his numbers continue to catch the eye.

He has created more chances (10) than any United player so far in 2023-24, as well as attempting 23 crosses. By comparison, Luke Shaw is next highest with just six attempted deliveries.

Fernandes also ranks joint highest for total touches for United, alongside Casemiro (251).

Answering the critics

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand has been particularly surprised by the criticism of Fernandes, after just three games of the new season.

Speaking on his Vibe with Five podcast, he said: "The flack he [Fernandes] has been getting this last week, I've been sitting there with my mouth wide open, thinking 'how dare these people talk like that'.

"He's the most creative player at this point in the season so far. He's the first player to get 10 goal opportunities created for his team-mates out of anybody.

"Since he's come to the club he's out performed every other player in terms of goals created, chances made and assists."

Taking the responsibility

Those high standards are perhaps why Fernandes is often blamed if United fail to perform.

His frustrated demeanour when things are not going to plan is little more than a sign of his desire to win.

No player in the Premier League created more chances than the Portuguese last season (119) and that could well be the case again by the end of 2023-24.

With a big game against rivals Arsenal coming up, United will be looking towards Fernandes for more moments of creative brilliance.
