Huddersfield strengthened their League One promotion credentials with a 2-0 victory over Exeter at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Defender Matty Pearson grabbed his third goal in six league games after 16 minutes, with Joe Whitworth unable to react quickly enough to save his close-range header from a corner.

Danny Ward thought he had doubled the lead after rounding Whitworth off Ben Wiles’ excellent through ball and slotting home nine minutes later, but the flag was already up for offside.

Huddersfield went two up just after the hour, however, as Wiles found himself in space outside the box and put a perfectly-placed shot into the bottom corner.

Josh Magennis wasted a chance to provide an immediate response for Exeter, looping a close-range shot over the bar in an effort to lob the onrushing Jacob Chapman.

Huddersfield had another strike chalked off for offside in added time, with Ward’s replacement Rhys Healey denied by the flag this time.
