Harry Kane was left to reflect on a "difficult spell" after Bayern Munich lost 1-0 to Lazio in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Having been beaten 3-0 by Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen last weekend to fall five points behind in the title race, Bayern put in another underwhelming display in Rome.

And England captain Kane, who has been prolific in front of goal since leaving Tottenham for Thomas Tuchel's side, concedes it has been a miserable week.

Speaking to TNT Sports, the 30-year-old striker said: "Really tough week. In the first half we started well and had clear chances, one for myself. In these games they're big moments.

"The second half was disappointing. We came out with less energy and less confidence.

"We got punished. Once you go down to 10 men it's always difficult.

"We have to find it among ourselves. We're still in the race for the Bundesliga and in this tie. We have to keep fighting.

"We're in a difficult spell. We have to fight. We have to turn it around. We have big games and big things to fight for.

"We're not out of it, we will never give up. We just need to turn it around. One game or spark can turn it around."

Dayot Upamecano was red-carded in the 67th minute at the Stadio Olimpico and Bayern failed to produce a single shot on target — leaving Tuchel under mounting pressure.

The Bavarians were knocked out of the DFB Pokal by third-tier Saarbrucken in November and lost the Super Cup to RB Leipzig at the start of the campaign.

A trophyless season would be regarded as a disaster and Bayern must dramatically improve if they are to progress in Europe and claim their 12th successive Bundesliga title.
