Germany vs Hungary predictions: Leaky Germans to win again

Germany can book their place in the last-16 of Euro 2024 if they perform as expected and defeat Hungary in Stuttgart on Wednesday.

Hungary were two goals down at half-time against Switzerland and the 3-1 loss was their seventh game without a victory, across the last three European Championships.

Team news

Germany are likely to be unchanged in a 4-2-3-1 formation with goalscorers against Scotland Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz all starting.

Jonathan Tah and Robert Andrich picked up bookings for Germany in the opening game, leaving them to walk a suspension tightrope.

Neither Loic Nego nor Callum Styles are expected to be fit for Hungary after missing the Switzerland match.

Germany made European Championship history on Friday, recording a 5-1 win against the Scots at the Munich Arena, which was the biggest opening victory ever seen in the tournament.

The defeat against Switzerland in Cologne means Marco Rossi’s Hungary have only won one of their last seven matches to be played outside of their home nation.

Germany have conceded in 13 consecutive games at major tournaments.

Prediction 

With the Germans entering Euro 2024 in unpredictable form, Julian Nagelsmann’s side could have easily felt the pressure against Scotland.

Instead, they treated the home crowd to a dazzling display in which they had effectively won the game by half-time, having built a 3-0 lead against a Scotland side who had Ryan Porteous sent off.

That gave Nagelsmann the freedom to be experimental with his line-up and of his five substitutions, two found the net, as Niclas Fullkrug and Emre Can completed the rout.

Fullkrug in particular looks like a great option off the bench, with the Borussia Dortmund striker having scored 12 times for Germany from just 17 appearances.

The attacking options of the hosts looks ominous for Hungary, who were off the pace in the first half against Switzerland and were very open defensively.

Their main weapon is Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai, who delivered the inviting ball that was headed home by Barnabas Varga for Hungary’s goal.

We can probably expect the Hungarian performance to improve and for Germany to struggle to quite hit the heights of their opening display, yet it is hard to envisage anything other than a victory for the hosts.

Since the 2022 World Cup, the Germans have conceded in 13 of their 16 games, but it seems inevitable that they will score enough goals to more than compensate for this weakness.
