Former England boss Venables dies aged 80

Former England boss Terry Venables has died at the age of 80.

Venables was at the helm for the Three Lions' memorable Euro 1996 campaign and enjoyed success at club level with the likes of Barcelona, Tottenham and Leeds.

The legendary boss' family confirmed the news via a statement on Sunday lunchtime.

It read: "We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness. 

"We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who we were so lucky to have had in our lives."

As a player, Venables broke through at Chelsea and made over 200 appearances for the Blues, before successful stints with Spurs and QPR — both of whom he would go on to manage.

His impressive work with both Crystal Palace and the Hoops led Barcelona to come calling in 1984, where he earned his famous nickname of "El Tel".

Venables led Barca to the LaLiga title and a European Cup final during his three years in Catalonia but was axed in 1987, before moving to Tottenham.

He lifted an FA Cup in North London and by 1994, Venables had been hired by the FA to take on the biggest job in English football.

His Euro 96 side became cult heroes after coming agonisingly close to glory, losing to Germany on penalties in the semi-final at Wembley. 

Gary Lineker, who featured under Venables at Barcelona, was among the first to pay tribute to his old boss.

Lineker wrote on Twitter: "Devastated to hear that Terry Venables has died. The best, most innovative coach that I had the privilege and pleasure of playing for.

"He was much more, though, than just a great manager. He was vibrant, he was charming, he was witty, he was a friend. 

"He'll be hugely missed. Sending love and condolences to Yvette and the family. RIP Terry."

Spurs confirmed they would be paying tribute to Venables ahead of Sunday's clash with Aston Villa.

Their statement said: "The club is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player and manager Terry Venables. Our deepest condolences are with Terry's friends and family at this incredibly difficult time.

"In tribute, we shall hold a minute's applause prior to kick-off and our players will wear black armbands during this afternoon’s fixture against Aston Villa. 

"Rest in peace, Terry."
