Wiegman: We want to put on a show

Sarina Wiegman is thrilled to be playing in front of a sold-out crowd as England’s Lionesses host Luxembourg in Stoke tonight.

The Women’s Euro 2022 champions play their first home game since they lifted the trophy after beating Germany 1-0 on a momentous day at Wembley in July.

Qualification for next summer’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand was secured by downing Austria last weekend — and now Wiegman wants to put on a show against a team they crushed 10-0 just 12 months ago.

The England boss said: "It is really exciting. There will be 30,000 to watch us, so we want to make it a nice celebration and a nice football game.

"This team is so eager to do well. I expect a very energetic team that wants to score lots of goals and concede none.

"There is a big difference in level between them and us so we should show that. We want to create many chances and score lots of goals. We want to get a big win."

After seeing her side win games 20-0, 10-0 twice and 8-0 during qualifying, Wiegman admits changes need to be made to help the women’s game grow.

She added: "We talked about this [before] of course — I think we need to make changes if it's better for the development of the women's game."

Fuchs: Stick with Rodgers

Ex-Leicester star Christian Fuchs has implored the club to stick with under-fire boss Brendan Rodgers.

The Foxes have lost five of their first six Premier League games this season, leaving some supporters calling for the Northern Irishman to go.

But Fuchs believes it would be the wrong decision following three successful campaigns under his stewardship.

He said: "I hope [he stays]. He is good for Leicester.

"When he took over, the first game was against Watford and we lost 2-1, but ever since we have made such a big leap forward in the right direction.

"If he left, I think that would be a significant impact on the club because he has really transformed the team from a counter-attacking team to one based on possession.

"And if he leaves, who do you bring in? Who can follow in his footsteps?

"You can't make irrational decisions. OK, five losses. But you cannot forget the years before, how successful he was."

Leicester welcome Aston Villa to the King Power Stadium on Saturday afternoon looking for their first win of the season.

Costa’s work permit issues

Diego Costa’s move to Wolves is in doubt after their initial application for a work permit was rejected.

It means the Molineux outfit will now have to appeal the decision if they want to sign the 33-year-old ex-Chelsea striker.

Costa is still expected to fly to England today ahead of a medical tomorrow, yet it may prove in vain.

Players must hit a 15-point threshold to gain a work permit, with points awarded on a range of factors including international appearances and how many minutes they have played.

Costa has been without a club since leaving Atletico Mineiro in January but Wolves’ injury problems have led to them moving for the free agent.

O’Neill: Ange's Bhoys have got a chance

Martin O’Neill reckons Real Madrid are often a "wee bit vulnerable" in the early stages of the Champions League — and that could play into Celtic’s hands.

The holders lost at home to minnows Sheriff Tiraspol in last year’s group stage, while Shakhtar Donestk did the double over them 12 months earlier.

Given the Bhoys' phenomenal start to the season and the form which they enter the Group E clash in, ex-Celtic boss O’Neill feels they could cause an upset.

"It’s a really glamourous game and, remarkably, a chance for Celtic," O'Neill said.

"I know Real are European champions and a fantastic club but sometimes they’re a wee bit vulnerable in the early stages of the competition.

"Of course it’s a difficult task. I just think Celtic are going into this game with nothing to lose. There is no pressure whatsoever on this particular game.

"The atmosphere is going to be absolutely phenomenal. It takes me back 20 years.

"Celtic have running power and ability and are in top-class form. It’s a no-lose situation for Celtic."

Marsch charged by FA

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch has been charged for the outburst which saw him sent off in his side's 5-2 defeat at Brentford.

American Marsch was livid when referee Robert Jones failed to give a foul for a shirt pull on Cryscencio Summerville by Aaron Hickey, before not even checking the VAR monitor.

The Whites head coach argued with the fourth official and nearest assistant referee, before Jones was called over and opted to send him to the stands.

Marsch has been charged with improper language and behaviour and has until Friday to respond to the charge.

If he chooses not to appeal, he will not be on the touchline for next Monday’s game against Nottingham Forest.
