Klopp on red alert

Jurgen Klopp has warned Liverpool not to underestimate Union Saint-Gilloise this evening. 

The Reds got off to a flying start in their Europa League Group E campaign with a 3-1 win against LASK last month. 

But writing in his programme notes, Klopp stressed that his side's Belgian opponents would relish the opportunity to cause an upset at Anfield.

He said: "I think most people saw the footage of the Union SG players when the draw was made and our clubs were put together in the same group, so it is pretty clear they will be looking forward to this game. 

"I loved their reaction — the excitement, the joy, the anticipation — it was all there. But we are also excited to play them.

"They are the leaders of the Belgian league, which says everything of their quality. They are a team causing a lot of interest in their own country and further beyond. 

"And on top of that they have the brother of Alexis Mac Allister, Kevin, in their ranks. Not a bad story, I would say."

Record breakers?

West Ham can set a new record for English clubs in Europe tonight by avoiding defeat against Freiburg. 

The Hammers are on an unbeaten run of 16 games, level with Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, Don Revie's Leeds side from the 1960s and Bill Nicholson's 1970s Tottenham team. 

And a win or a draw this evening would see David Moyes' men write their names into the history books. 

Asked about the possibility ahead of the Group A Europa League game in Germany, West Ham boss David Moyes said: "I didn't know that.

"Not bad names then, are they? It would be a great achievement if we can do that. Let's hope we can keep it going.

"We've done well in Europe over the last couple of seasons. We want to try to continue that."

West Ham, who won the Europa Conference League last season, kicked off their Europa League campaign with a 3-1 win against Backa Topola last month.

Ban stands

Kirsty Hanson will sit out Aston Villa's next three Women's Super League matches after the club's appeal to reduce her ban failed. 

Ref Rebecca Welch red-carded the winger for a challenge on Manchester United's Hayley Ladd in the 74th minute of last Sunday's 2-1 defeat at Villa Park. 

A brief statement on the club's website said: "We did appeal the decision in the hope of Kirsty being available for selection sooner rather than later but we were unsuccessful."

Scotland international Hanson, 25, will miss Villa's trip to Liverpool on Sunday evening, the visit to Arsenal on October 15 and the home match with Tottenham on October 21. 

Feels like home

Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu is already feeling at home at Stamford Bridge. 

The Frenchman, 19, only joined the Blues from Rennes in August but has quickly taken to life in West London. 

He told the club's official website: "It's been really good. Everyone has been kind with me. 

"I am very happy to be part of this team. I'm close with the French players — and there are a lot in the squad!"

Ugochukwu is in good company with fellow Frenchmen Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Malo Gusto, Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile also in Mauricio Pochettino's squad. 

Liver transplant

Former England midfielder Kieron Dyer has undergone a successful liver transplant. 

Chersterfield coach Dyer, 44, was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver condition with no cure, in 2019.

In a statement released today, he said: "The gratitude I feel for the position I find myself in has no bounds and I feel blessed to leave hospital feeling healthier than ever. 

"Strangely, football has been even more important to me during this time. I have watched more games from my hospital bed in the last three months than in any other period of my life.

"I want to thank my hometown club Ipswich, who have been in regular contact with me, and also Chesterfield. 

"A particular thank you to the manager Paul Cook, who has given me the ability to contribute, even from hospital, where I've watched every fixture as the lads have made their way to the top of the National League. 

"I look forward to returning to coaching and media work but I respectfully ask for privacy for myself and my family at this time as I strive to make what I hope will be a full recovery."
