A sinking Schip 

Ajax have placed John van 't Schip in charge on an interim basis after the club's awful start to the Eredivisie season.

The 36-time league champions sit bottom of the league and were thrashed by PSV Eindhoven on Sunday.

A statement read: "The former Ajax player signs an agreement with the club that runs from October 30, 2023 to June 30, 2025. 

"Van 't Schip and Ajax agreed that he will take up a position in technical management with effect from July 1, 2024."

The new boss added: "I am happy that it is complete and I am very much looking forward to starting at the club where it all started for me.

"I have a very good feeling from the conversations I have had with everyone involved about this. Ajax must quickly take the path upwards and I am happy to contribute to that."

Palhinha heroics

Fulham boss Marco Silva has hailed midfield powerhouse Joao Palhinha after he helped the Cottagers salvage a point at Brighton.

The Portuguese international cancelled out Evan Ferguson's opener at the Amex Stadium and impressed his head coach.

Silva said: "He leads through his attitude, he's not the most vocal guy and he's improving his English as well.

"I want him to be more vocal and in that position, it's important. 

"His attitude, his commitment, the way he leads the others around are things that are hard to find in football and in moments [when] we lose the ball his reaction is impressive and we want to take the best from him in these moments and in other moments we want him to keep improving.

"We won the ball in a high area and our players took the right decisions, the finish from Joao was great."

Onwards and upwards

Mohammed Kudus says West Ham must move on quickly from their Premier League defeat to Everton on Sunday.

The Hammers are targeting a Carabao Cup win over London rivals Arsenal on Wednesday and the former Ajax attacker sees the game as a great opportunity to end a poor run of form.

He said: "We definitely want to bounce back against Arsenal. 

"The good thing is there are a lot of games and we don't have time to be too disappointed.

"If you don't score then you need to not concede, but we didn't do that. We need to learn from that and focus on our next game.

"The focus now has to be on Arsenal, our next game, and how we do better."

Keep Palm and carry on

Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino hailed summer signing Cole Palmer for his performance in the Premier League defeat to Brentford on Saturday.

The England Under-21s international joined the Blues from Manchester City in the summer and has become a staple feature of Pochettino's starting XI.

And after his impressive display at the weekend, the boss said: "We are happy with the way he has arrived. 

"He arrived on the last day of the transfer window but is playing like he has been here 10 years, showing his character and personality.

"I cannot say I did not expect that but also if I say I expected it then I'm lying. You create expectations always when you sign a player but, of course, he is doing well.

"You only feel the player when you have the player, and from day one when he started to train, you could see the talent. He still needs time to improve."

Drinkwater retires

Premier League winner Danny Drinkwater has announced his retirement from football at 33.

The former Leicester and Chelsea midfielder confirmed his decision on the High Performance podcast and admitted he has been in limbo for too long.

He said: "This has probably been a long time coming, I think, but I'd like to announce my retirement from professional football.

"I think I've been in limbo for too long. I think I've either been kind of wanting to play but not getting the opportunity to play at a standard or a level where I felt valued.

"I didn't think it would bother me but saying it then it's almost like scratching a nerve a bit.

"I think I've been ready for it, not stopping at my peak and it's simmered down a bit, that's helped the transition."

Fuelling the fire

Erling Haaland says he used opposition fans chanting "Keano" at him as motivation in the Manchester derby on Sunday.

The Norwegian star bagged two goals and an assist in a comfortable 3-0 win for his side and admits the chants made him want to score even more.

He said: "There were so many people singing 'Keano', I don't know why, but I used it as motivation and gave them a good celebration."

Guardiola was asked to comment on the matter and he responded: "I think Erling knows his motivation is to score at Old Trafford against a confident team. He loves to score a goal."

Treble winner Haaland is a candidate to win tonight's Ballon d'Or but his heroics on Sunday may not be enough to pip Lionel Messi to an eighth title.

He has already scored 11 goals in the Premier League this term and is on course for another record-breaking campaign.
