Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite believes inconsistent refereeing cost the Toffees any chance of points in their Merseyside derby defeat at Liverpool.

The visitors were beaten 2-0 at Anfield on Saturday, playing most of the match with 10 men after Ashley Young was shown a second yellow card on 37 minutes.

However, Reds defender Ibrahima Konate appeared fortunate to not suffer a similar fate in the second half after fouling Beto when on a booking — a decision that perplexed England Under-21s defender Branthwaite.

He said: "Beto went past Konate who was on a yellow already, takes him down. It's clear, so I don't know how it's not a second yellow card.

"He's gone right through the middle of the pitch, it's one vs one, it's a blatant yellow but he [Craig Pawson] hasn't given it, so we can't do anything about that now.

"There's no consistency throughout the refereeing. If they get a sending off, then it's back to a level playing field and it can be a different game."

Emotional occasion

Erik ten Hag admits emotions will be riding high when Manchester United walk out at Old Trafford for the first time since Sir Bobby Charlton's passing.

The Red Devils host FC Copenhagen in a crucial Champions League encounter tomorrow night, having taken no points from their first two group games.

And having seen his side beat Sheffield United at Bramall Lane just hours after the news of Charlton's death broke, the Dutchman hopes his players can pay a fitting tribute to the club legend on home turf.

Ten Hag said: "Firstly we want to win and pay tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton. You always want to do that in a certain way and that is what we are aiming for.

"Definitely tomorrow after the passing of their hero, the legend, the giant, I'm sure the fans will be even more emotional, I expect.

"We are professionals, it's our job. You can't ban emotions but you can use emotions in the right way, which we will try to do."

Jose Mourinho was sent off during Roma's dramatic 1-0 victory over Monza on Sunday after making a crying gesture to the opposition bench.

The Giallorossi were heading for a frustrating stalemate with their 10-man opposition before Stephan El Shaarawy's 90th-minute winner prompted jubilant scenes in the Stadio Olimpico.

Mourinho, 60, took the opportunity to poke fun at Monza's staff after the goal but his actions were spotted by the officials, who swiftly dismissed him.

The Portuguese tactician will now be absent from the touchline for next Sunday's trip to his former club Inter Milan.

Asked about the incident, Mourinho said: "Why was I sent off? I don't know. I made two gestures towards the opposing bench but I didn't use offensive words."

Tip my Hat

Luton boss Rob Edwards says his players rose to the challenge by securing a precious comeback point at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Hatters were 2-0 down at the City Ground with only seven minutes remaining but goals from Chiedoze Ogbene and Elijah Adebayo rescured a dramatic draw which keeps them outside of the Premier League's bottom three.

For Edwards, 40, the result was a thoroughly deserved one having seen his side suffer two narrow defeats prior to the international break.

He said: "I challenged the players before the game to get something, to get a result because the last two games in my opinion at home against Tottenham and Burnley, we deserved to get more and we didn't. 

"So it was about finding a way to get a result and I'm really, really pleased the players did that.

"I had a lot of optimism before this game anyway and even if we'd have lost 2-0, I still would have had a lot of optimism. What pleases me is we've got something from the game."

High praise

Marcelo Bielsa is a "special coach" who is on a level with Pep Guardiola, according to his former Leeds star Robin Koch.

German defender Koch, who joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan this season following the Whites' relegation to the Championship, is expected to make his move back home a permanent one in January.

But the 27-year-old admits working under Bielsa — who steered his new employers Uruguay to a 2-0 win over Brazil last week — was a special experience.

Koch said: "In Bielsa, I had a special coach at times. I've never seen a coach who works in such detail.

"I don't know how many games he watches a week. It feels like all of them. He knows pretty much everything about football, which is unbelievable.

 "We always knew exactly what to expect because he analysed everything. He is a world-class coach like Guardiola."

Owls fined

Sheffield Wednesday have been fined £50,000 for the pitch invasion that followed their dramatic play-off semi-final win over Peterborough last term.

The Owls, who currently sit rock bottom of the second tier, have also been warned about their future conduct after admitting all charges imposed by the FA.

Having lost their first leg 4-0, Wednesday completed the most remarkable turnaround in play-off history when beating Posh 5-1 at Hillsborough before prevailing on penalties — prompting jubilant scenes at the full-time whistle.

However, the FA's new stricter rules surrounding crowd control mean that memorable moment has turned out to be a costly one.

Gunners boost

Arsenal's two-goal hero Katie McCabe hailed the "special" return of Vivianne Miedema as the Gunners overcame Bristol City 2-1.

Dutch ace Miedema, 27, had been out since December 2022 with an anterior cruciate ligament injury but made her return in the closing stages of yesterday's Women's Super League clash.

Her comeback followed that of team-mate Beth Mead, who also came off the bench for her second appearance since suffering the same injury.

Speaking at full-time, match winner McCabe said: "She's worked so hard over the last few months. It was a special moment for Viv.

"To have both her and Beth back within a week of each other is so special for the team. I'm sure we'll see that combination coming up plenty in the next few weeks."

Welcome Matt

Matthew Etherington has taken interim charge of League Two strugglers Colchester.

Former Stoke, West Ham and Tottenham winger Etherington, 42, will step up from his role as the club's Under-21 coach after Ben Garner was sacked last Saturday.

The U's have lost nine of their 13 games this term and are currently second-bottom of the fourth tier.

A club statement read: "Matty will remain in charge of the First Team affairs while the club considers its long-term options."
