Skinner calls for change

Manchester United boss Marc Skinner has called for significant changes to the qualifying process for the Women's Champions League after the Red Devils were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain.

The French side won 4-2 on aggregate and Skinner was far from pleased after missing out on making Friday's group stage draw.

He said: "It's crazy that we have to play PSG in this qualifying round, crazy.

"It needs to be something that is addressed. Having said that, we will learn from it. We'll come back stronger. We got a taste of it.

"I'm going to make sure we're driven to make sure we are a constant fixture in the Champions League.

"We've scored a goal that should stand. It's ridiculous. If that's the level of officiating at this standard, it's not good enough."

Heckingbottom rues injuries

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom summarised a bad few weeks for the club as injury problems continue to mount for the Blades.

Chris Basham suffered a nasty-looking fractured ankle in the defeat to Fulham but the injury is not thought to be career-threatening.

Heckingbottom said: "When you are looking at these injuries, when people are having operations, it is just the length of time they are out for.

"He is still in hospital. He is going crazy inside those four walls. He has had a couple of operations that were needed."

Captain John Egan and Tom Davies have also had surgery during the international break and will be out for an extended period.

Heckingbottom added: "It was a shocking week for injuries, the other two have had surgery. They are going to be out for a long time."

Hair horrors

Mikel Arteta joked he was "missing a few mirrors" during his playing days and admits close friend Pep Guardiola has a better fashion sense than him.

The Arsenal boss was speaking ahead of the Gunners' clash with Chelsea on Saturday and was quizzed about his old hairstyles.

"I think I was missing a few mirrors in my house, because I don't like the way it looks. My hair doesn't need a lot of caring for. I just need some gel and that's it.

"I've got better hair than him [Guardiola] I think, but I think he's a very elegant person."

When asked whether their friendship was tested after Arsenal beat Manchester City before the international break, the Spaniard was quick to clarify.

He added: "We said goodbye to each other and we talked after that, like we do when we win and lose. That shouldn’t change. Obviously there are different emotions for both of us but we should be able to do that."

UEFA pause matches in Israel

UEFA have paused matches in Israel until further notice as the ongoing crisis continues in the Middle East.

The international side have already seen two of their Euro 2024 qualifiers postponed and games may have to be played at a different venue if the conflict is not resolved.

A statement from the governing body said: "After a thorough evaluation of the current safety and security situation in the whole territory of Israel, the UEFA Executive Committee decided that no UEFA competition matches shall be played in Israel until further notice. 

"The Israel Football Association and its clubs Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Tel-Aviv have been requested to propose alternative venues/stadiums outside the territory of Israel for their home matches to be used as long as this decision remains in force."

Robbie Keane's Tel Aviv had been flying high in the Israeli Premier League but will have to make arrangements to play their Europa Conference League matches outside of their home country alongside Maccabi Haifa.

The latter has also withdrawn from the UEFA Youth League.

Focused on the football

Aaron Ramsdale is focused on his football for club and country but admits it is strange how much attention is being given to his battle with David Raya.

The 25-year-old signed a new contract with Arsenal last season but has since found himself relegated to the bench in the Premier League.

On his tussle for the Gunners' No1 jersey, he said: "I think because it's one of the first times it's happened with the situation it has been difficult.

"There's a lot of attention and there's a lot of talk at the minute.

"Whether it is me or David who plays, we need to be able to just focus and play but at the same time, it's a strange, big headline but we have to deal with it and that is what we are doing.

"This isn't the first time my name has been in the press and it has been more negative stuff so I have drowned it out before."

Rowett departs 

Millwall have announced that manager Gary Rowett has left the club by mutual consent. 

The Lions sit 15th in the Championship but remain just three points off the play-off places.

Rowett, 49, was appointed in October 2019 and led the club to top-half finishes in each of his three full seasons in charge.

He said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed being manager of Millwall and depart with a feeling that the club has progressed during my tenure.

"As is sometimes the case in football, the time just feels right to part ways."

Adam Barrett and Paul Robinson have taken charge temporarily while the South London outfit search for a new head coach.

All Black to basics

Declan Rice has revealed the England squad drew inspiration from New Zealand's Rugby World Cup victory over Ireland to get the job done against Italy on Tuesday night.

The Three Lions secured qualification for Euro 2024 at Wembley Stadium and the Arsenal midfielder explained how his team-mates approached the game.

He said: "Ireland had 35 attacks in the last wave and New Zealand were on the line.

"Even though it's a different sport, we can take lessons from the fact that it's about leaving everything out there.

"That mindset of getting over the line. That is what we're now starting to achieve. 

"We have all the talent but it is about that mindset and the drive to be the best and to win."
