Simply the Beth

Beth Mead has been named as the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year for 2022.

It comes after the 27-year-old inspired England to the Women's Euro 2022 title last summer, with six goals seeing her land the Golden Boot as well as being named Player of the Tournament.

The Arsenal forward was also runner-up in this year’s Ballon d’Or and paid tribute to her team-mates at club and international level when receiving the accolade.

Mead said: "I don't think I've quite processed it yet. It's a huge honour for me.

"I've just been enjoying my football this season and for me, these are nice trophies to get hold of, but again, I continue to keep saying it and it's becoming a cliche now, but I wouldn't have got these without my team-mates throughout the season at Arsenal, throughout the season for the international team."

England skipper and Arsenal team-mate Leah Williamson said: "I've looked up to Beth. What you see is what you get with her. She's had a great year and I'm glad she's got the recognition because these are the moments we play for."

Go on my Son

Tottenham star Heung-Min Son has confirmed he will be fit to feature for South Korea at the World Cup.

The 30-year-old forward had been a doubt for Qatar after requiring surgery on a fractured eye socket last week.

However, an Instagram post from last season’s Premier League Golden Boot winner suggests any concerns over his participation have since been put to bed.

Son said: "I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you all for the messages of support I have received over the last week.

"I have read so many of them and truly, truly appreciate you all. In a tough time I received a lot of strength from you!

"Playing for your country at the World Cup is the dream of so many children growing up, just as it was one of mine too. I won’t miss this for the world. I can’t wait to represent our beautiful country, see you soon."

Walk a mile in my shoes

Gillingham boss Neil Harris says his side’s Carabao Cup upset at Brentford was made all the sweeter by his players being forced to WALK to the stadium.

The Kent-based League Two outfit found their team bus stuck in traffic and after consulting with their driver, opted to finish their journey on foot.

Though kick-off had to be delayed by 20 minutes, it did not impact their performance level with Mikael Mandron’s header cancelling out Ivan Toney’s early opener before the underdogs held their nerve in a dramatic penalty shootout.

Harris explained: "We got to about a quarter of a mile from Chiswick Roundabout and we got stuck.

"Fortunately, we had a tactics board on the bus but we couldn't move and they couldn't get a police escort to us. We got in touch with the officials and decided to walk it.

"It's a memorable night because of the performance, but also because of the factors surrounding it."

The Gills, who sit third-bottom of the fourth tier, have reached the fourth round of the competition for the first time in 26 years.

Horror injury

Bath City forward Alex Fletcher remains in intensive care after sustaining a serious head injury in last night’s National League South game with Dulwich Hamlet.

The fixture was abandoned after Fletcher, 23, crashed into advertising hoardings surrounding the pitch at Twerton Park which are reinforced with concrete blocks.

Bath and Fletcher’s parents have released a joint-statement on his condition, which reads: "Unfortunately Alex has sustained a severe head injury as a result of last night’s events.

"He required emergency neurosurgery to stabilise his condition and was then admitted to intensive care, where he remains in a stable but critical condition. 

"Alex’s family would like to thank everyone for their best wishes that have been sent."

The club added: "Everyone at Bath City is sending their unconditional love, strength and support to Alex and his loved ones."
