Former England and Everton defender Phil Jagielka has announced his retirement from football.

The 41-year-old has been a free agent since being released by Stoke at the end of last season.

Jagielka posted on Instagram: "All good things come to an end and after just over 800 appearances my playing career is done.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would get to play football at the highest level for some amazing clubs as well as my country."

Jagielka played 40 times for England and was part of the Three Lions' squad at the 2014 World Cup.

Extremely harsh

Jamie Carragher believes Wolves were on the receiving end of two "extremely harsh" VAR calls in their 3-2 defeat at Fulham.

Marco Silva's side secured victory through two Willian penalties in the second half, the first awarded for a Nelson Semedo foul on Tom Cairney and the second for Joao Gomes' trip on Harry Wilson.

Sky Sports pundit Carragher said: "Semedo caught the top of Cairney's boot. I think it is extremely harsh. Semedo also gets a touch on the ball, not a lot but there is not a lot of contact with Cairney either.

"He stands on his big toe. We are talking the end of his toe but once the ref has given it, VAR has to find a clear and obvious error."

When asked about the second penalty, the Liverpool legend added: "Again, extremely harsh. [The] ref has an unbelievable position, shakes his head straight away. [It] looks worse when slowed down.

"I actually think that is more of a penalty than the first one but once the ref has not given it that should not be overturned — it's not a clear and obvious error."

Statue unveiled

Manchester City have officially unveiled their new statue of club legends Colin Bell, Francis Lee and Mike Summerbee.

The tribute, created by sculptor David Williams-Ellis, is located on the west side of the Etihad Stadium.

Bell, Lee and Summerbee are widely regarded as three of City's greatest ever footballers, with the trio playing key roles in the Citizens' 1967-68 First Division title triumph and 1969 FA Cup win.

Former England winger Summerbee said: "This is a truly special moment for me and my family.

"I joined Manchester City in 1965 and it is the best decision I could have possibly made."

Birthday present

Manchester United starlet Alejandro Garnacho has gifted the boots he wore to score his wonder goal against Everton to a young supporter.

A heart-warming clip of the incident outside the Red Devils' Carrington training complex has emerged on social media.

Garnacho said: "This is my present. I scored yesterday in these ones so you have to use [them]."

The delighted young supporter replied: "Thank you so much. I'm so happy. Garnacho gave me his boots."

Asked what the message on the box said, he added: "To my friend, George, happy birthday. Thank you Garnacho, I love you. You're the best in the world."

New deals

Bayern Munich goalkeepers Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich have each signed a new contract until 2025.

Neuer, 37, recently returned to the Bavarian side's XI after recovering from a broken leg, with Ulreich deputising admirably in his absence.

Eleven-time Bundesliga champion Neuer said: "I'm happy to be staying at Bayern for another year.

"I'm sure that, together with the fans, we can achieve our big goals — and obviously the 2025 Champions League final in Munich is one of them. Knowing that I still have Sven by my side makes it even nicer."

Ulreich added: "I'm pleased to continue working together with Manuel. I've had much more in common with Manuel than just a passion for football — we're friends."
