EFL resumes

The EFL have confirmed that fixtures will resume this week.

Weekend action across the United Kingdom was postponed as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last Thursday.

However, games will go ahead from tomorrow evening with protocols in place to allow fans to pay tribute to Her Majesty.

An EFL statement read: "A minute's silence will be held before matches, with black armbands to be worn by participants, flags to be flown at half-mast and the National Anthem to be played in stadiums."

However, it was also noted that specific fixtures could still be called off if too much strain is put on police resources.

The statement added: "With a national policing plan now in operation, the league and clubs will continue to work with forces in respect of any challenges that may emerge regarding policing of specific fixtures.

"Consideration to individual circumstances made on a case-by-case basis."

The Queen’s state funeral will take place on Monday, September 19, with no sporting events expected to go ahead that day.

Magpies swoop for Karius

Ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has signed a short-term deal with Newcastle.

The German stopper, 29, left Anfield as a free agent this summer and joins the Magpies to provide cover after Karl Darlow sustained an ankle injury.

His contract on Tyneside runs until January but there is an option to extend until the end of the season.

Boss Eddie Howe said: "We are pleased to add Loris to our goalkeeping group.

"He is a very good goalkeeper with Premier League and European experience and he will provide competition and support over an important part of the season.”

Baggies land Rogic

Former Celtic midfielder Tom Rogic has joined Championship outfit West Brom on an initial one-year deal.

Australian international Rogic, 29, left the Glasgow giants at the end of last term in search of a fresh challenge having won 16 major honours north of the border.

Baggies boss Steve Bruce said: "Tom is a quality player who has played nearly 300 games for Celtic, including a significant number of games just last season. 

"He has proven to be a quality player, a serial winner, and a top professional. He can play in several positions across midfield and I’m confident he will prove to be a great acquisition for the club. I’m delighted to have him with us."

The deal remains subject to international clearance with West Brom set to host Birmingham on Wednesday evening.

Allegri keeps cool

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri refused to throw match officials under the bus despite late VAR carnage in his side’s 2-2 draw with Salernitana.

The Old Lady saw a 95th-minute Arkadiusz Milik winner disallowed after a review due to offside, though fresh images have since suggested Antonio Candreva may have played the Pole onside.

While the header was chalked off, Milik still received a second yellow card for his premature celebrations, with winger Juan Cuadrado, visiting defender Federico Fazio and Allegri also shown red in the chaotic aftermath. 

Yet Juve’s boss, 55, opted against berating the referee at full-time despite his obvious frustration.

Allegri said: "I never talk to referees after games. A goal was disallowed and it's a fact.

"The only thing is that I’d like to watch the video again. Candreva is close to the corner and we haven’t seen that video — what if he keeps everyone onside? 

"We don’t have that video, nobody has it, so I don’t know.

"However, referees must be left alone, the protagonists are the footballers. We have 10-15 good referees in Italy."

Juve had only drawn level in the 91st minute after Leonardo Bonucci scored a rebound from his own saved penalty in a pulsating contest.

Home full-back Gleison Bremer started the comeback after goals from Candreva and Krzysztof Piatek had given the visitors a shock 2-0 half-time lead.

UEFA makes the cut

UEFA’s four leading club competitions will feature in the iconic Football Manager video game series for the first time ever this year. 

The Champions League, Europa League, Europa Conference League and Super Cup will be included in Football Manager 2023 with their official licensing in another exciting step for the franchise.

Miles Jacobsen, studio director at Sports Interactive, said: "Adding these historic competitions is an ideal fit for all parties involved and will add another dynamic and challenging element for fans that makes this year’s edition the most realistic football management simulation available."

The 2023 edition is due to be released on November 8 and will also be available on Playstation 5 alongside the usual PC version.
