Sir Alex and Wenger join Hall of Fame

Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger have become the first managerial inductees into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

Legendary former Manchester United boss Ferguson, 81, is the most successful manager in the competition’s history with a record 13 titles.

Wenger won three Premier League crowns during his two decades in charge of Arsenal, including their unprecedented Invincibles season in which they lifted the 2003-04 title without losing a game.

The pair shared an iconic rivalry on the touchline over the years and have joined the likes of Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry and Eric Cantona in being honoured for their contributions to the English top flight since its rebrand in 1992.

Glaswegian Ferguson said: "It’s an honour when you receive recognition like this. 

"However, it’s not just about me as a person. It’s about the job at Manchester United and the bond we had over many years, so I’m also proud for the club, the staff and my players.

"I feel Arsene is a very worthy inductee as he transformed Arsenal fantastically. 

"They became a tough team to compete with and we both wanted to win, which motivated us further."

Wenger, 73, arrived as one of the Premier League’s first foreign managers and is credited with playing a huge role in the development of the division after winning the league in his first full season in 1997-98.

The Frenchman said: "I’d like to be known as someone who loved Arsenal, who respected the values of the club and left it in a position where it can grow and become even bigger.

"To share this with Sir Alex is a great honour for me. It’s like two boxers, you fight like mad and go the distance together. 

"At the end of the day, you have respect and it will be a great opportunity to meet with him, share a good bottle of wine and memories of our old battles."

Paratici ban extended worldwide

Tottenham managing director of football Fabio Paratici's future at Spurs has been plunged into uncertainty after FIFA extended an initial ban in Italy to be effective worldwide.

Paratici, 50, had been serving the suspension in his homeland after former club Juventus, where he was sporting director and then managing director, were found guilty of false accounting.

He left Juve to join Spurs in the summer of 2021 and was set to play a key role in the North Londoners’ search for a new manager following Antonio Conte’s departure last week.

A statement read: "FIFA can confirm that following a request by the Italian FA, the chairperson of FIFA disciplinary committee has decided to extend the sanctions imposed by FIGC on several football officials to have worldwide effect."

It comes after Spurs published a lengthy interview with the Italian on Tuesday in which he said Conte’s exit was the "right decision for everyone" and that the club was focused on supporting interim coach Christian Stellini in their push for the top four this season.

McLeish laughs off Spain jibes

Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish told Spain to "eat the humble pie" after captain Rodri led complaints about the Tartan Army’s tactics during their famous 2-0 win at Hampden.

The Manchester City midfielder branded the home side’s approach "rubbish" after falling to a shock defeat in the Euro 2024 qualifier in Glasgow last night.

He accused Scotland of provoking his team-mates and time-wasting by staying down, while La Roja debutant David Garcia also claimed the grass was too long.

McLeish, 64, told Sky Sports: "Come on, get a grip guys, just eat the humble pie and say the better team won on the night.

"They will be really urgently looking to get the game in Spain and make up for it. That’s the way football goes.

"Scotland won deservedly and Spain should just eat that pie and get on with it."

Reliant Ruben

Ruben Loftus-Cheek insists he does not mind playing as a right wing-back for Chelsea but prefers to operate in the centre of the park.

The 27-year-old is a midfielder by trade but has been a regular feature on the right flank under Graham Potter this term when Reece James has not been available.

His versatility has led to him starting 19 times in all competitions this season, his best tally for the Blues in a single campaign.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Loftus-Cheek said: "I’ve played a few positions but mostly this season either centre midfield or right wing-back.

"Of course, I want to play in midfield but sometimes you have to do a job in different positions, as I can play a few positions.

"I haven’t really played in that kind of attacking midfield position on the left side for a couple of years now."

The Blues return to Premier League action against Aston Villa on Saturday following an upturn in form prior to the international break to relieve the pressure on ex-Brighton boss Potter. 

Terriers name prospective owner

Huddersfield have announced their prospective new owner as American businessman Kevin M Nagle.

The Championship strugglers confirmed last week they had agreed a takeover with an unnamed US consortium.

Nagle is currently the owner of California-based Sacramento Republic, who play in the USL Championship.

The 68-year-old said in a statement: "I am beyond pleased to announce I have entered into agreement with Dean Hoyle to purchase a full stake in Huddersfield.

"As the approval process is now under way, there will be no further comment until finalization, as we wish to 100% respect that process.

"I would, however, like to thank Dean for all his help and support along the way and I cannot wait to meet and speak to the wonderful Town fans."
