United women set to host record crowd at Old Trafford

Manchester United women will be watched by a record crowd as they take on Aston Villa in the Women's Super League on Saturday.

It will be the third time that Marc Skinner's side will play at the Theatre of Dreams and it is expected to blast past the previous best of 20,241 that saw them beat Everton in March.

The Red Devils established themselves as title challengers after beating Arsenal 3-2 in their previous outing and will be looking to continue their good form against the Villans.

Skinner said: "We want to get to a stage where we sell out Old Trafford as a team regardless of gender.

"We’re up and around 30,000, if not more, and it was rising. It’s a good number. Obviously we’d still love lots and lots more.

"The more exposure we have, it shows the qualities. The [Arsenal] game was a wonderful advert for women’s football and for football in general.

"Every fan loves that comeback story, the last-gasp goal, the celebration of having the away fans together, and I think that was a big step up for women’s football in terms of having that designated area, because it felt different."

LaLiga calls for action on Juventus

LaLiga has called for "immediate sports sanctions" to be placed on Juventus after the club’s entire board resigned.

The Old Lady are under police investigation due to a series of salary manoeuvres that were made between 2019 and 2021.

In April, the Spanish league filed an official complaint with UEFA regarding the Italians’ alleged financial fair play breaches.

A statement said: "As part of its campaign to promote financially sustainable football in Europe, LaLiga continues to pursue these complaints against Juventus and demands immediate sporting sanctions to be applied on the club by the relevant authorities,

"LaLiga has long been a major proponent for the implementation, application, and enforcement of strong financial sustainability rules in football.

"The Spanish competition itself has applied its ‘economic control’ rules for nearly a decade, at the request of the clubs that make up the league.

"Financial sustainability is paramount to protecting the business of football."

Toure leaves Leicester

Former Arsenal and Manchester City defender Kolo Toure has left his role as a first-team coach at Leicester to become the new boss of Championship outfit Wigan.

Toure, 41, has been part of Brendan Rodgers' coaching team at the King Power Stadium since 2019, adding experience and a winning mentality that saw him lift numerous trophies during a glittering playing career.

The Latics have been searching for a new manager since dismissing Leam Richardson earlier this month and have now confirmed the former Ivory Coast international's arrival.

Toure has just under a fortnight to prepare for his managerial debut, which will come on December 10 when his new side take on Millwall at The Den.

Leicester released a statement announcing the departure of the two-time Premier League winner, thanking him for his service to the club.

It read: "Leicester can confirm that first team coach Kolo Toure will leave the club to take up a new position as manager of Championship side Wigan Athletic.

"Everybody at Leicester City would thank Kolo for his contribution during a successful period for the club and wish him the very best as he begins his career in management."

World Cup pitch invader faces no charges

The man who ran onto the pitch during the World Cup match between Portugal and Uruguay has been released following a brief detention, the Italian foreign ministry has said.

He entered the pitch sporting a T-shirt with "Save Ukraine" on the front and "Respect for Iranian woman" on the back.

Mario Ferri was chased down and detained before being taken off the field at Lusail Stadium — the venue set to host the final in December.

The action was taken to showcase support for LGBTQ+ groups and protest against the illegality of homosexuality in Qatar.

On the incident, the Italian foreign ministry said: "The foreign ministry, together with the Italian embassy in Doha, followed the case after the pitch invasion, after a brief detention, he [Ferri] was released by the authorities without any further consequences."

 Ferri has been involved in similar protests at football games, including at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he raised the issue of children living in poverty. 

Page coy on key duo

Rob Page has suggested that Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey could both be used from the bench in Wales' World Cup clash with England.

The Dragons have so far only picked up one point in their first World Cup campaign for 64 years and are set to be eliminated from the tournament in Qatar unless results go their way this evening.

Both Ramsey and Bale have failed to inspire them to success and Page hinted in his press conference that the pair may not be fit to start against the Three Lions.

He said: "It’s a big ask for anybody in this environment to go four days later.

"I’m going to pick a team that I think can go out and compete against England, whether that’s with or without them. I’m not going to give that away.

"If they don’t start, can they can make an impact? That’s always been my dilemma playing games in quick succession."

Wales must beat England by four or more goals to outrank them in the group, while any victory will prove enough for second spot should the USA and Iran draw.

Onana frustrated by Cameroon dismissal

Andre Onana has released a statement expressing his frustrations at his dismissal from Cameroon's World Cup squad.

Onana, 26, was booted out of the camp in Qatar for disciplinary issues with the coaching team and has now confirmed that he will leave his teammates for the remainder of the tournament.

In a statement released on his social media, he said: "I want to express my affection for my country and the national team. 

"I have put all my efforts and energy into finding solutions to a situation that a footballer often experiences, but there has been no will on the other side.

"Some moments are difficult to assimilate, however, I always respect and support the decisions of the people in charge of pursuing the success of our team and country.

"I extend all my strength to my team-mates because we demonstrated that we are capable of going very far in this competition.

"The values that I promote as a person and as a player are the ones that identify me, and that my family has given me since my childhood."
