Roman empire

Roma have signed French defender Evan Ndicka on a five-year deal.

Ndicka, 23, was out of contract following the end of his five-year spell at Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt, where he won the Europa League in 2021-22.

On signing for the Giallorossi, the highly-rated centre-back said: "The way that the project was explained to me along with this club's history and prestige made me want to come to Rome, which is a fantastic city that loves and lives for football.

"I can't wait to take to the [Stadio] Olimpico pitch in front of my new supporters and make my contribution towards achieving our objectives."

Hammers punishment

West Ham have been fined £50,000 and their fans banned from their first Europa League away game next season.

UEFA's decision comes after objects were thrown at Fiorentina players and fans invaded the pitch during the Europa League Conference final, which the East Londoners won 2-1.

And Hammers supporters will be banned from another away European game if there is more disorderly conduct in the next two years.

Roma manager Jose Mourinho has been suspended for four matches after he directed abusive language at referee Anthony Taylor during the Giallorossi's Europa League final loss to Sevilla.

Kroos control

Toni Kroos has signed a one-year contract extension at Real Madrid, keeping him at the club until 2024.

There were suggestions last season that the German maestro, 33, was prepared to announce an early retirement.

But he will continue with Los Blancos, where the ex-Bayern Munich ace has played his football since 2014.

Kroos' trophy count with the Spanish giants stands at 20, which includes four Champions Leagues and three LaLiga titles.

He has made 417 appearances for Real in total, scoring 27 goals.

Saudi embargo

Gary Neville has urged the Premier League to temporarily prevent players from joining Saudi Arabian clubs.

The Manchester United legend, 48, wants there to be checks in place to ensure the deals are not harming the integrity of the game.

N'Golo Kante and Karim Benzema have already completed switches to Al-Ittihad, with Ruben Neves and Kalidou Koulibaly set to join Al-Hilal.

Neville said: "The Premier League should put an instant embargo on transfers to Saudi Arabia to ensure the integrity of the game isn't being damaged.

"Checks should be made on the appropriateness of the transactions. If it comes through that process, obviously transfers could open up again. 

"But I do believe, at this moment in time, transfers should be halted until you look into the ownership structure at Chelsea and whether there are beneficial transfer dealings that are improper."

Germany manager Hansi Flick hinted his players are lacking confidence after they suffered a 2-0 home friendly defeat to Colombia on Tuesday.

Liverpool ace Luis Diaz scored the opener in Gelsenkirchen with a diving header before Juventus winger Juan Cuadrado secured victory for the South Americans with an 82nd-minute penalty.

After the loss at Schalke's Veltins-Arena, Flick said: "What can I say? The arguments are not on our side at the moment. We have to analyse it, draw our lessons.

Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay has lifted the lid on what was said during the rain delay in their Euro 2024 qualifier against Georgia.

The match at Hampden Park was suspended soon after Callum McGregor fired Steve Clarke's men in front on six minutes, with proceedings delayed for two hours.

Georgia players initially refused to re-enter the pitch, deeming the conditions unplayable after the downpour.

And McTominay, who scored the hosts' second goal in the 2-0 win, was spotted giving the opposition an earful alongside Celtic midfielder McGregor.

Asked what was said, the Manchester United midfielder explained: "We want to play. We've come here to play, not tomorrow afternoon or night, we want to play now. 

"The crowd was amazingly patient and that's a real credit to them because they kept us going tonight even when it was tough for us. 

"They [Georgia] had quite a bit of the ball, more than we expected and we did well."
