Show some respect

Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe believes Lionel Messi did not get the respect he deserved during his time in France.

Messi, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 2022, has departed the Ligue 1 champions and is set to suit up for Inter Miami in the MLS for the foreseeable future.

The 35-year-old had a mixed reception in Paris, with some fans often seen jeering the ex-Barcelona maestro after he captained his country to victory over France in the World Cup final.

And Mbappe, who could be sold by PSG this summer, believes his former team-mate was not treated with much dignity in the capital.

He said: "He's one of greatest players in the history of football. It's never good news when someone like Messi leaves.

"I don't quite understand why so many people were so relieved that he was gone.

"He didn't get the respect he deserved in France."

Playing through the pain

Heung-Min Son has admitted that he played in pain for the majority of Tottenham's 2022-23 season.

Son, 30, saw a significant dip in his Premier League form this term, scoring just 10 times compared to 23 in 2021-22.

The South Korean forward has undergone surgery in recent weeks to correct a sports hernia which may mean he misses the upcoming international matches under new boss Jurgen Klinsmann.

When asked to reflect on the season, he said: "I thought a lot about whether I had to tell you this, but in fact, I had a hard time throughout the season.

"I endured it [an injury] for eight to nine months, but it didn't work, so I ended up having surgery.

"When I'd pass or turn, everything I do moves around my core [muscles].

"And because it was that part that hurt, I could perform around 60% of what I could."

Virgil van Dijk admits new Liverpool recruit Alexis Mac Allister must be the first of several new faces if the Reds are to challenge for next season's Premier League title.

The Merseysiders finished a disappointing fifth in 2022-23, having only missed out on top spot on the season's final day one year earlier.

And Dutch defender Van Dijk is keen for his club to get up and running quickly in 2023-24.

On Mac Allister's arrival, he said: "I think he's a very good player.

"Obviously we've played against him many times, also with Holland against Argentina.

"I think he definitely will be a big addition and something we need in order to be back where we all want to be.

"So it's a good start to the transfer window. Hopefully we get a couple more quality additions to follow."

Kroos control

Toni Kroos is hoping Jude Bellingham can hit the ground running at Real Madrid

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has heaped praise on new signing Jude Bellingham after the club announced his arrival today.

Kroos, 33, said: "Jude is a very top player, who many teams wanted due to his quality and age.

"I usually have great confidence in our decision-makers.

"If Real Madrid has spent so much, this is a very good transfer for us.

"I've seen highlights of Dortmund mainly in the Champions League. Bellingham usually played very, very well there.

"We had another player who came for a lot of money and basically let his career die.

"It was a lot of money, I think everyone would say that wasn't a good transfer. But let's be positive."

Madrid's new look

Real Madrid have released their new home kit for the 2023-24 season.

For the first time, the shirt features the iconic Hala Madrid slogan on the collar to celebrate 121 years of greatness in Spain's capital.

Sam Handy, vice president of design for adidas, said: "This season, we've given fans of Real Madrid — one of the most elegant clubs in the world on and off the pitch — a jersey that is luxurious in its simplicity.

"The white hues that have adorned Real Madrid kits since its inception are a powerful emotive trigger for those who share it, and this latest release really is a true celebration of that."

Available today, fans can get their hands on the new strip through Real Madrid stores, selected Adidas retail stores and online.

The home jersey will be worn on the pitch for the first time on the club's pre-season tour in the United States.

Antonio Conte departed Tottenham as they stumbled to an eighth-place finish in the Premier League

Antonio Conte claims he had to walk away from Tottenham because some of the players had settled for mediocrity.

The Italian, 53, led Spurs to the Champions League in his first season, but could not replicate his good fortunes in his second year despite receiving significant backing the transfer market.

His explosive rant after the club's 3-3 draw with Southampton was the final straw for Conte, who did not return to the dugout after the collapse.

The former Inter Milan head coach has spoken out after a few months away from football, saying: "The last experience, like all of them really, had some things that were positive and some less so.

"The experience was wonderful, we did the maximum possible and gave all that we had.

"When I arrived, the team was in eighth or ninth place, yet we qualified for the Champions League.

"Then this season, with the side in fourth position, I decided we should part ways with Tottenham. Some had decided to settle for less."
