American dream

David Beckham hopes to turn Inter Miami into the footballing equivalent of the New York Yankees.

England icon Beckham, 48, is co-owner and president of the side that has made waves with the stunning signing of Lionel Messi.

And the legendary midfielder admits Miami's off-field brand is almost as important to him as their results on the pitch.

Beckham told The Athletic: "I said [to the club's marketing partner], 'What I want is the New York Yankees'.

"Whether you're a baseball fan, whether you're a fan of the Yankees, whether you love New York, I want to create a brand like they have.

"You see the Yankees hat and straight away you know what it is. I want people walking around in our baseball caps knowing that it's a Miami cap, that's a Miami brand.

"Even if you're not a soccer fan, you want to wear the jersey and the cap."

Messi's new club have won both of their clashes since his arrival, with the man himself netting three times.

Sacre bleu

Luis Enrique did not have much to smile about as his side were stunned by Cerezo Osaka

There was more pre-season misery for Paris Saint-Germain this morning after the French champions were humbled 3-2 by Cerezo Osaka.

Les Parisiens' tour of Japan kicked off with a disappointing goalless draw against Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr on Tuesday but today's result against the J-League's fifth-placed side was even more alarming.

Goals from Hugo Ekitike and Vitinha were twice cancelled out by the underdogs before former Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund ace Shinji Kagawa netted a memorable winner.

PSG boss Luis Enrique, who only took the reins earlier this month, said: "I'm fully convinced that to play good football, we need a style of play that gives us as many opportunities as possible to keep possession of the ball.

"But we also need the players to make decisions. I liked the mobility of our team, the changes of position, the rhythm of the game. I liked the way the team played, but not the result or the defensive errors, obviously."

The heat is off

Luton have been granted special dispensation by The FA to start their Premier League campaign without undersoil heating.

The Hatters have already had to postpone their opening home clash with Burnley as they attempt to rush through £10million worth of improvements to their Kenilworth Road home.

But the addition of undersoil heating — which is listed as a mandatory requirement in the Premier League's rulebook — has been deemed impossible to implement before the big kick-off.

Other top-flight clubs have supposedly expressed their concern about the decision, citing an increased likelihood of postponements due to adverse weather conditions which would cause fixture congestion.

But the ruling means Luton's first home game with West Ham on September 1 remains on track.

Flying high

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds funded 16 short-haul flights for Wrexham players last term

Wrexham's playing squad took 16 domestic flights during their National League title-winning campaign.

The Hollywood-owned Red Dragons are back in the Football League after 15 years away having broken the fifth tier's points record last term.

But Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's side are now facing scrutiny from environmental activists after a BBC report revealed they took 16 short-haul flights to games last term.

With an average journey time of just 43 minutes, the findings once again raise questions about football clubs' collective responsibility to lower their carbon footprint.

Launching their bid

Italy and Turkey have launched a joint bid to host Euro 2032.

The two nations had both initially submitted individual applications but have opted to merge together to increase their chances of success.

Providing the bid meets UEFA requirements, it will be considered alongside any rival applications later this year with a final decision set to be announced in October.
