Changes afoot

England boss Sarina Wiegman is considering ringing the changes for the Lionesses' second Women's World Cup group game against Denmark tomorrow.

The European champions secured a nervy 1-0 win over minnows Haiti in their opener last week courtesy of Georgia Stanway's retaken penalty.

Alessia Russo was selected over Women's Super League Golden Boot winner Rachel Daly and struggled to make an impact during an unconvincing team display.

Lauren James was another notable absentee from the starting XI, with wingers Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp quiet in the wide positions.

On whether she may mix her team up, Wiegman, 53, said: "I want to make changes.

"What we do is approach every game and then when we get ready for that game we see who is fit and available. We then make decisions to what we need to start with.

"And then we decide whether we are going to start with the same XI or maybe make some changes."

Aussies to make Kerr call

Sam Kerr remains an injury doubt for Australia's must-win World Cup clash with Canada.

The Matildas captain remained absent for the co-hosts' shock 3-2 defeat to Nigeria which has left their hopes of knockout qualification in the balance.

Only a victory against Olympic champions Canada on Monday will preserve their status in the competition and manager Tony Gustavsson has revealed their talisman may not be available once again.

He said: "All I can say now is that I hope so.

"I know it’s going to be tight and most likely we won’t get confirmation until the night before the game.

"It might even be that we need to test her to see if she can play on game day. That's how tight it is, I know that.

"I know we're going to get questions now all the way to the game, but I'm not going to be able to tell you until either the night before the game or on game day, because that’s how long we need to wait to see if she’s available or not."

Welcome Maat

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino says Ian Maatsen is currently in his plans for the upcoming campaign after catching the eye during pre-season.

Lift-sided Dutchman Maatsen, 21, was a key man during Burnley's Championship title-winning campaign last term and has been in similar form since returning to his parent club.

And new Blues boss is excited by what is to come from the versatile ace after starting him in all three of their friendlies in the United States.

Pochettino told Chelsea's website: "I am so happy with him. He is a player that can play in different positions. He has quality, he understands the game, and he is such a clever player.

"So far, he is in my plan, yes. I am so pleased with him, as I've said, because of his attitude, commitment and his understanding of the game.

"He is a player that you can use in different positions and that is a good thing for the team and the coaching staff. It is always good to have this type of player."

Sam Siro

AC Milan have confirmed the signing of winger Samuel Chukwueze from Villarreal.

The Nigeria international has penned a five-year deal at the San Siro and will wear the No21 jersey at his new club.

Chukwueze, 24, spent six years with Villarreal, joining as an academy player before going on to make 207 appearances for the senior Yellow Submarine.

He scored 37 goals for the LaLiga side and was part of the side that won the Europa League in 2021.

One Zel of a duo

Katie Zelem believes England team-mates Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway are "two of the best midfielders in Europe".

The Barcelona and Bayern Munich midfield duo led the Lionesses to Euro 2022 glory last summer and will look to work similar wonders during their ongoing Women's World Cup campaign.

They started England's 1-0 opening win over Haiti last week and Manchester United captain Katie Zelem has revealed how much she is learning from training with the prestigious pair.

Speaking on Lionesses Down Under Connected by EE, Zelem, 27, said: "I think it's so good being here to challenge myself in training.

"Going up against the likes of Kiera Walsh and Georgia Stanway every single day in training, two of the best midfielders in Europe in my eyes.

"It’s a nice test and great to see all different styles of play come together."

Adidas have released imagery of the Golden Boot award that will be handed out to the top scorer at the Women's World Cup.

Brazil forward Ari Borges currently leads the way to land the much sought-after gong after bagging a hat-trick in their 4-0 opening win over Panama.

Behind Borges are Jennifer Hermoso, Sophia Smith, Alba Redondo, Alexandra Popp, Hinata Miyazawa and Lindsey Horan — of whom have found the net twice in Australia and New Zealand.

The Golden Ball and Golden Glove will also be given to the best player and best goalkeeper at the tournament respectively, with second and third also recognised in each category.

A new look

Bayern Munich have released their new away shirt for 2023-24.

The black, pink and green design from adidas takes inspiration from the Bavarian club's Mia san Mia slogan — roughly translating to We are who we are.

The motto embodies the Bavarian giants' fierce ambition, resolute self-belief and unwavering commitment and takes its place inside the jersey's collar.

Both the on-field and fan editions feature a map-inspired graphic on the front with pink and green diamonds, each of which represent Bayern fan clubs from all around the world.

Thomas Tuchel's men will debut their new strip against Kawasaki Frontale in Tokyo on Saturday.

The shirt is available to purchase HERE.
