Poch plan for Conor

Conor Gallagher is still in Chelsea's plans despite interest from Tottenham and West Ham, according to manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The England midfielder has been the subject of a reported £40million bid from West Ham this week but still has a role to play at Stamford Bridge.

Pochettino said: "At the moment I am happy with him and his performance. Conor is in our plan. I was talking with him the first day that he arrived.

"In football, things can happen we cannot manage. At the moment, I am happy with him and his performance, he has two years on his contract. We have nothing to say."

Lopetegui alarm

Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui says that the club must sign more players this summer if they are to be competitive in the Premier League.

Raul Jimenez departed Molineux for Fulham on Tuesday — following Nathan Collins, Conor Coady and Ruben Neves out of the door — and Lopetegui revealed that even those sales do not allow him much leeway in the transfer market.

In an interview with Guillem Balague, he said: "In May, we started talking about the new situation, the financial problem. 

"It was a new situation for me because I came here with the idea and project that we were able to increase our performance and make a noise in the Premier League.

"In the summer we had plan A and then we had to adapt after this new situation. We had to start thinking about cost-effective players but it's true that, at the moment, we can't develop this plan too. 

"We lost a lot of players this summer, so we want to sign a lot more players. We must balance this situation, we must balance the squad to be competitive in the Premier League."

The gap is closing

England defender Lotte Wubben-Moy has been struck by how competitive the Women's World Cup group stage has been so far.

The Lionesses got their campaign off to a winning start on Saturday, beating Haiti 1-0, and though the Arsenal ace did not feature in the game she was impressed by their unfancied opposition.

Speaking to Lionesses: Down Under connected by EE, she said: "I think it’s really important to note that the gap is closing. 

"Even seeing Haiti, how competitive they were, it was pretty amazing. And likewise with Jamaica [who drew 0-0 with France]. 

"We want every World Cup to be as competitive as possible. In the last World Cup we saw 13-0 scorelines, I’d like to think we’re not going to see many of those this year."

Auba's Chelsea nightmare

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's dad has opened up on his son's hellish 12 months at Chelsea.

The 34-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge after a six-month stint at Barcelona but scored just three goals in 21 appearances for the Blues.

A move to Marseille was confirmed this week and Pierre-Francois Aubameyang says that the striker finally has a smile on his face.

He told L'Equipe: "His jaw was broken by robbers at his home in Barcelona while trying to protect his wife and children.

"At Chelsea, he played with a mask at the start. It could only be a nightmare year. 

"Now it's over. He's signing for Marseille. It is a big relief after the nightmare year that he experienced at Chelsea."

Cruyff inspiration

Barcelona have unveiled their new away kit with the design paying tribute to club icon Johan Cruyff.

The strip is predominantly white — a nod to the second strip worn by the Catalan giants during the 1970s.

The club said: "Barcelona introduces their second kit for the 2023-24 season, which has an innovative design that pays tribute to the man who developed Barca's playing style, Johan Cruyff.

"Players like Alcantara, Samitier, Cesar and Kubala, among others, already wore a white jersey between the 1920s and 1970s."
