Shaka grateful for support

Shaka Hislop has taken to Twitter to thank colleagues and viewers for their support after his on-air collapse.

The former West Ham goalkeeper, 54, was providing analysis for US broadcasters ESPN on Sunday when he stumbled and fell over in a distressing incident.

Now out of hospital, Hislop said in a short video statement: "Well, that was awkward. What a 24 hours this has been.

"Every so often life gives you a moment to pause and this was mine. There's so much I have to be thankful for.

"My response now has to be to seek out the best medical opinion I can get and listen to what my doctors have to say.

"I would like to say thanks to Dan [Thomas] and the ESPN family — the camera operators, the medical staff at the Rose Bowl who all responded in the way they did and afforded me the care that I got. Thank you."

El of a player

Ellie Roebuck admits her England team-mates will need to keep a keen eye on Pernille Harder when they face Denmark on Friday.

The Lionesses got their Women's World Cup off to a solid start with a narrow 1-0 win over Haiti and could take a huge step towards the knockout stages with a victory over the Danes.

But Manchester City stopper Roebuck, 23, knows that Bayern Munich attacker Harder has the tools to cause the European champions huge problems.

Speaking on today's Lionesses: Down Under connected by EE, she confessed: "Their [Denmark's] DNA is quite similar to what we have faced in the past. 

"We have to be wary of the key players. Pernille Harder is a good player to watch out for, of course. 

"I think it's just being mindful of that and not being too distracted from how good we are, and make sure we really impose ourselves on them."

Pep's education

Ilkay Gundogan says working under Pep Guadiola took his football knowledge to new heights.

Gundogan, 32, called time on a glittering seven-year stint at Manchester City this summer to join Barcelona, signing off with a historic Treble trumph.

And the German midfield ace has paid testament to his former boss, who fittingly enjoys legendary status in Gundogan's new home of Catalonia.

He said: "Before I joined Man City, I thought I knew football. I was 25 or 26 years old, I'd seen a lot. I'd played a Champions League final. 

"But now standing here after seven years of Pep's school, I'd say I didn't know anything about football before. His influence on the team and me personally was immense."

And on joining his new club, he added: "Since I was a child I just adored Barcelona. With players like Ronaldinho and [Lionel] Messi, and then [Sergio] Busquets, [Andres] Iniesta, Xavi. 

"I always said to myself that when I got the opportunity one day, I didn't want to miss out."

Tragic loss

Martin O'Neill has paid tribute to his "electric" former Nottingham Forest team-mate Trevor Francis.

Francis, who became British football's first £1million player in 1979, passed away at the age of 69 yesterday, prompting an outpouring of emotion from the football world.

O'Neill, who won the European Cup alongside Francis, was effusive in his praise of the late 52-cap England international.

Writing in the Guardian, he said: "Trevor was absolutely electric. He had blinding pace. 

"He wouldn't have been your archetypal centre forward in terms of an Alan Shearer, able to hold the ball up, but he could turn defenders any way.

"I was in pretty regular contact with him over the last few years. He was a couple of years younger than myself, a year younger than John Robertson and you'd never think Trevor would be among the first in the team to leave this earth. 

"It is really sad that a brilliant, brilliant player has gone from us."

Bolt from the Blues

Manchester City fans are charged up with the release of their side's electric-themed third kit.

The PUMA-designed shirt features an array of striking lightning bolts, complemented by a neon pink sponsor and crest offering.  

Treble-winning midfielder Jack Grealish said: "I absolutely love the new third kit. It is a proper eye-catcher and will look brilliant on the pitch."

City will debut their new threads in a clash with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, which takes place in Tokyo tomorrow.

Shear-er!

Newcastle have unveiled their latest summer addition — a Toon-themed Shaun the Sheep sculpture.

Wor Shaun has been herded up to his new home outside St James' Park as part of an art trail project designed to support local charity St Oswald's Hospice.

Magpies fans can visit their new fluffy friend until September 27, when he will be wrapped in cotton wool and auctioned off to the highest baa-der.
