Fofana blow

Wesley Fofana's bad luck shows no sign of abating after it was confirmed that he has had surgery on a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

Fofana broke his leg in 2021 while at Leicester, before suffering a different knee injury in his first campaign at Chelsea.

The Blues confirmed the news this afternoon, saying: "Defender Wesley Fofana has undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery.

"The 22-year-old did not travel to America for the club's pre-season tour due to specialist medical assessments, which unfortunately confirmed that an operation would be required.

"Wesley will now begin his recovery and work with the club's medical department at Cobham during his rehabilitation phase."

Bayern Munich have completed the signing of Minjae Kim from Napoli.

The centre-back, who played 35 matches as his side won Serie A last season, joins the Bundesliga champions on a five-year deal after his £43million release clause was activated.

He will wear the No3 shirt for his new club and is set to compete with Dayot Upamecano and Matthijs de Ligt for a place in Thomas Tuchel's side.

Cristiano Ronaldo says the Saudi Pro League is better than MLS
Cristiano Ronaldo says the Saudi Pro League is better than MLS

Cristiano Ronaldo claimed the Saudi Pro League is "better than MLS" after Lionel Messi was unveiled as an Inter Miami player over the weekend.

The Portuguese, who signed for Saudi side Al-Nassr last January, also believes that European talent will continue to head for the Middle East in the coming seasons.

He said: "The Saudi league is better than MLS.

"I'm 100% sure I won't return to any European club. I opened the way to the Saudi league and now all the players are coming here.

"European football has lost lot of quality. The only league that for me has a lot of quality and is at a higher level than all the others is the Premier League.

"The Spanish league does not have that great quality. The Portuguese league is a good league, but it is not a top, top league. The German league I think has also lost a lot. I'm sure I won't play in Europe again. I want to play in Saudi Arabia.

"In a year, the Saudi league will overtake the Turkish league and Dutch league."

'We've got to be all in'

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou explained that he expects mistakes as his players get used to a new way of playing.

Spurs lost 3-2 to West Ham in a friendly in Australia on Wednesday and Postecoglou said after the game: "I'm talking about the intent. I'm trying to provide the security and structure for my players to play that kind of football.

"There will be missteps along the way but we've got to be all in. They were trying to do that but at times it wasn't working because they weren't sure yet what positions to be in but that's what we can show them and work on."

Opposite number David Moyes said: "I think Tottenham were a good side [today].

"They have an amazing centre forward, probably the best in the world. When you've got an amazing centre forward you have always got the chance of winning games."

Chelsea absentees

Reece James will fly out late to Chelsea's pre-season tour
Reece James will fly out late to Chelsea's pre-season tour

Reece James has not travelled with the rest of the Chelsea squad for the club's pre-season tour to America.

The Blues set off on Monday for a busy trip that includes five matches as Mauricio Pochettino prepares for his first season in charge.

He will be without two of his star players — at least initially — with Fofana staying behind after undergoing ACL surgery and James absent through illness.

The England full-back made only 24 appearances last season in an injury-hit campaign but is expected to travel stateside as soon as he recovers.

Benoit Badiashile is a long-term absentee and misses the trip, while Marcus Bettinelli and Armando Broja are also recovering from injuries.

Romelu Lukaku was also not on the plane as the club look to seal the striker's exit.

Monster Monch

Spanish international Isco has claimed that he was physically assaulted by former Sevilla sporting director Monchi after a disagreement about his future.

The midfielder, now without a club, says that he called the club chief "the biggest liar I had ever met in the world of football", allegedly resulting in heavy-handed retaliation.

The 31-year-old said: "He assaulted me. He came towards me, grabbed me by the neck, we moved away from each other and they had to separate us completely.

"I couldn't be at ease in a club where the sporting director assaults me and nobody speaks out or apologises. Neither for the aggression, nor for all the lies he was leaking. So, I forgave my contract and left."

Off you Pep

Spaniard Pepelu has left Levante for local rivals Valencia just one season into a 10-year contract.

The 24-year-old held a shirt adorning an infinity symbol when he agreed the deal in 2022, implying that he would remain with the club forever, but jumped ship after the Granotes failed to win promotion to LaLiga last term.

The six-time champions have swooped to sign him for £4.3million, with the midfielder sensibly limiting himself to a five-year deal this time around.
