Not about the money

Jim Ratcliffe insists he is at Manchester United to win trophies rather than to make money.

The INEOS chairman agreed to buy 25% of the club last month and has taken over football operations at Old Trafford.

After the 71-year-old met with fans on Tuesday, the Manchester United Supporters Trust provided an update.

They said: "His [Ratcliffe] main message was that everything at United needs to be ruthlessly focused on creating winning teams on the field — something we are sure all fans will agree on.

"He also expressed that he views our club as a 'community asset' and stressed his purpose in taking a share in United is not to make money.

"We were able to set out to Sir Jim what we think the key priorities are. A clear plan to get back to the top, putting in place a football structure with the right people in the right roles, an investment plan in both teams and the stadium and building a genuine and strong partnership with fans that supports success."

VAR you joking?

David Moyes called out the inconsistency of having VAR in place for the FA Cup at some venues and not others after West Ham's controversial 1-0 defeat at Championship side Bristol City.

Video referees are only in place for matches hosted at Premier League stadiums, a situation Moyes claims is "ridiculous".

He said: "If we're not having VAR, we shouldn't have it in the tournament at all. If we're going to have it, then have it everywhere.

"It's incredible they call it the best cup competition in the world. Yet one week you have VAR, one week you don't.

"I find it quite ridiculous they try to claim that but it's not level for every club.

"I've had a look at it [Said Benrahma's red card] and I don't think we can have any complaints. I don't think his reaction was correct. It was a sending off. I wasn't sure about the tackle on him. That might have been questionable."

Genuinely scared

Former England footballer and current pundit Eni Aluko says she has been "genuinely scared" after receiving online abuse, with the 36-year-old now having left the country to escape the situation.

Ex-Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton recently compared Aluko and her colleague Lucy Ward to serial killers Fred and Rose West.

Aluko said on her Instagram story: "I'm human and I'm more than happy to admit I've been scared this week.

"I didn't leave my house until Friday and I'm now abroad because it's really important to say that online abuse has a direct impact on your safety and how you feel.

"I felt like something was going to happen to me. And I don't say that for anyone to feel sorry for me, I say that for people to understand the reality and the impact that hate speech has."

Reputational damage

Danny Murphy believes Jordan Henderson has suffered serious reputational damage as an expected move from Al-Ettifaq to Ajax nears.

Henderson only signed for the Saudi club six months ago but is already on the way out having reportedly failed to settle in the area.

And Murphy believes the sorry episode reflects badly on the ex-Liverpool captain.

He said on talkSPORT: "He [Henderson] has messed it up really.

"I don't think from the Liverpool fans' perspective, but for a broad spectrum of football people his character and his reputation has been damaged by this whole episode.

"Depending on your financial situation, sometimes it [a move to Saudi Arabia] is a no-brainer but he was wealthy anyway."

I'll pack my bags

Barcelona manager Xavi says he will be happily leave the club if he has lost the faith of his players.

Reports emerged earlier this week that some Barca stars were turning on their boss after a run of just four wins in eight matches across all competitions.

And the 43-year-old is prepared to be told to leave the club.

He said: "If I hadn't won LaLiga last year I wouldn't be here.

"The day my players no longer follow me, I'll pack my bags and leave.

"I'm calm. I have three titles to win. We're closer to success than failure."

Snodgrass retires

Former Leeds and West Ham midfielder Robert Snodgrass has announced his retirement from football.

The 36-year-old — who achieved 28 caps for Scotland — played for 10 clubs across a 20-year career, including 171 appearances in the Premier League.

He wrote on social media: "A little lad from the east end of Glasgow got to live his childhood dream for 20 years.

"Getting to represent my country, playing over 600 games, scoring over 100 goals and 100 assists is something I wouldn't have imagined doing.

"Thank you to my team-mates and coaches. Lastly, a huge thank you to the supporters who drove me forward and supported me through good and bad times."

Rangers have signed 19-year-old Olivia McLoughlin on loan from Aston Villa.

The midfielder has made 42 appearances for the Villains since her debut in January 2021 but is now in search of more first-team football.

Villa boss Carla Ward said: "Liv will be playing a significant amount of minutes with Rangers and we feel the regular playing time will aid her development substantially.

"We will be monitoring her progress closely and we wish her the very best during her time in Scotland."

Rangers sit top of the Scottish Women's Premier League having won 16 and drawn one of their 17 matches.
