World Cup hero passes

Andreas Brehme — scorer of the winning goal for Germany in the 1990 World Cup final — has died at the age of 63.

The left-back scored a decisive 85th-minute penalty as his side lifted their third title by beating Argentina 1-0 in Rome.

Brehme racked up 86 appearances for Germany and won the Bundesliga with both Kaiserslautern and Bayern Munich as well as a Serie A title with Inter Milan.

A statement from Bayern said: "FC Bayern are extremely saddened by the sudden passing of Andreas Brehme. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

"Andreas Brehme will forever be in our hearts, as a World Cup winner and, more importantly, as a very special person. 

"He will forever be part of the FC Bayern family. Rest in peace, Andi!"

FA can't stomach Wilder comments

Sheffield United's Chris Wilder has been left in a pickle after being fined by the FA for his remarks over an assistant referee eating a sandwich.

The Blades boss was left furious when he spotted an official chowing down on a post-game snack after approaching referee Tony Harrington for a grilling following their 3-2 defeat at Crystal Palace last month.

Wilder, 56, told the media: "One of his assistants was eating a sandwich at the time, which I thought was a complete lack of respect. 

"Hopefully he enjoyed his sandwich while he was talking to a Premier League manager."

An FA statement today read: "Chris Wilder has been fined £11,500 for media comments that came after Sheffield United's game against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Tuesday, January 30.

"It was alleged that the manager's comments constitute improper conduct in that they imply bias and/or attack the integrity of the referee, or referees generally, and/or bring the game into disrepute."

Palhinha latest

Fulham vice-chairman Tony Khan says the club are open to "sensible" offers for Joao Palhinha but insists he would prefer to keep their star man at Craven Cottage.

Palhinha, 28, was reportedly on the verge of joining Bayern Munich last summer before the deal fell through on deadline day, leading him to sign a new deal in West London in September.

But the Portuguese midfielder has remained a source of transfer speculation, with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City credited with an interest.

Khan told talkSPORT: "He's a huge part of the core fold, and we love having him here and we want him part of the team as long as possible, we were very happy to extend his contract.

"If an offer came along and it made sense for everyone, I think that's something you have to consider with every player at the right time.

"We want to keep him and we have kept him. He's been staying with us and there's a lot of demand. There's now a huge market for Joao Palhinha. Now, eyes have opened."

All change at Marseille

Marseille have appointed former Ivory Coast boss Jean-Louis Gasset as their new manager after sacking Genaro Gattuso.

Gattuso, 46, took over in September but has been relieved of his duties with the club ninth in Ligue 1 after only nine wins in 24 matches in charge.

Les Phoceens have decided to replace the Italian with Gasset, who was sacked by Ivory Coast during the recent Africa Cup of Nations group stage before they went on to win the tournament.

The Frenchman, 70, said: "It's a huge honour for me to join this legendary club that is Olympique de Marseille. 

"I can't wait to start working with this group to prepare for the upcoming events and give our best."

Coming home

Barnet have announced plans to return to their original home after 10 years out of the borough.

Bees chairman Anthony Kleanthous wants to build a new stadium having played their games at The Hive in Edgware since 2013.

The North London club's previous ground Underhill Stadium was their home for more than a decade before they relocated due to leasing issues with the council.

Underhill has since been demolished Kleanthous is ready to press ahead with plans to construct a new 8,000-capacity stadium located in South Underhill.

He said in a statement: "I always felt that if it were possible, then Barnet should return to the home from where it took its identity.

"We hope that we will receive the full support of Barnet fans, local residents and the council so that we can bring our incredible club back to where it belongs."
