Potter not feeling Blue

Graham Potter believes Chelsea are moving in the right direction despite their 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash.

The Blues managed 21 shots to the home side’s 14 at Signal Iduna Park, with Joao Felix going closest after seeing his first-half effort cannon off the crossbar.

But after being punished by Karim Adeyemi’s sensational 63rd-minute solo goal, Potter’s men will welcome their German counterparts to Stamford Bridge on March 7 with plenty to do.

Potter, 47, said: "We have to do better. We were pushing at the time [of the goal] and were the better team so to concede in that manner is what we’re disappointed in, but the players are honest.

"They know they can do better with that. We have to help them, of course, but again we’ll probably focus on the positive which was the performance was another step forward for us.

"Before the game we were looking at Reece [James] and Ruben [Loftus-Cheek] and Ben [Chilwell] and Kalidou [Koulibaly], you know it’s their first and second games for quite some time.

"It isn’t easy to pick up the speed of the Champions League but I still think they did it really well, you’ve still got three new players coming in and again playing against a team that is in a good moment.

"So hopefully I think we will improve and then in three weeks’ time we can take the game at Stamford Bridge."

Ayling extends at Leeds

Leeds have exercised a clause in Luke Ayling’s contract to extend the defender’s deal until the summer of 2024.

The right-back, 31, was set to be out of contract at the end of this season on his previous terms.

He is one of the Yorkshire side’s longest serving players, racking up 237 appearances since joining from Bristol City in 2016 when they were still in the Championship.

The Whites are currently without a manager after sacking Jesse Marsch last week with the club just one point above the relegation zone.

Ayling said: "All my focus is on Leeds United staying in the Premier League this season, but it goes without saying that I love this football club and I am delighted to extend my stay into next year."

Gunners still favourites says Ake

Nathan Ake believes Arsenal remain title favourites
Nathan Ake believes Arsenal remain title favourites

Nathan Ake insists Arsenal remain favourites for the Premier League title despite Manchester City’s 3-1 victory at the Emirates seeing them leapfrog their rivals at the top of the table.

Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland were on target as the Citizens returned to the summit for the first time since November 5 with a potentially crucial win.

Pep Guardiola’s men lead the way on goal difference but, as Ake points out, the Gunners still have a game in hand as they push for their first league title in 19 years.

Asked whether City are now favourites to retain their crown, the Dutch defender said: "No.

"They [Arsenal] still have a game in hand so they still have three points on us so we don’t want to get carried away, we will keep doing what we are doing, go game by game and take it from there.

"We knew beforehand it was going to be a very big game and we just wanted to win the game and get the three points and we did."

The FA has launched an investigation after Arsenal fans threw objects at Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne during last night’s Premier League game at the Emirates.

The Belgian opened the scoring in a 3-1 win for the champions and was seen being targeted by plastic bottles and other missiles by home support as he made his way to the dugout following his 88th-minute substitution.

English football’s governing body will look into the incident, which was included in the referee’s post-match report.

Antonio Conte will step away from Tottenham first-team duties once again following a routine check-up in Italy.

The Spurs boss returned to the dugout for recent defeats against Leicester and AC Milan after a short period out following an operation to have his gallbladder removed.

Conte had admitted he was not fully 100% for those games and has now been advised to take more time out to get back to full speed.

A club statement read: "Following a routine post-operation check in Italy yesterday [Wednesday], Antonio Conte will remain at his family home to further and fully recover from his recent gallbladder surgery.

"Health is the most important consideration and everyone at the club wishes him well. Cristian Stellini will assume first-team responsibility."

Assistant Cristian Stellini took charge of Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Manchester City in Conte’s absence and will also lead the team for Sunday’s Premier League clash with London rivals West Ham.

Walsh doubt for Lionesses

Midfielder Keira Walsh is a doubt for England’s opening match of the Arnold Clark Cup against South Korea tonight through illness.

Barcelona ace Walsh, 25, did not train on Wednesday ahead of their clash in Milton Keynes but there are no other concerns for manager Sarina Wiegman.

The Lionesses are looking to defend their title after winning last year’s inaugural edition and also face Italy and Belgium over the next seven days.

The Dutch boss said: "She has a little stomach bug. Everyone else is ready.

"It gives lots of opportunities to see players and combinations against different opponents. Every camp is important to see where players are at.

"We know this tournament will give us lots of information but there are still many games to play [before the World Cup]."

England, who were crowned European champions in the summer, remain unbeaten in 26 games under Wiegman as they prepare for this summer’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
