Chelsea’s Kerr-iffic night
Sam Kerr insists Chelsea are determined to win the Continental Cup after notching four goals in the Blues’ 7-0 demolition of West Ham in last night’s semi-final.
The Australian striker was at her best as she netted a first-half hat-trick at the Chigwell Construction Stadium before adding a fourth on the hour mark.
Arsenal await Emma Hayes’ side in next month’s final at Selhurst Park as the West Londoners look to lift the trophy for the third time in four seasons.
Kerr, 29, said: "That was our aim, to reach the final and we can hopefully go and win it this year.
"The most important thing was making the final so I thought it was a really good team performance and a clean sheet after a tough couple of games, so we’re really happy.
"I think we all played really well as a team and then individually but everyone just did their job. And when we play like that, no one can get near us, really. It’s quite scary how quickly we can move the ball.
"It just all clicked and came together and it was one of those nights where it felt like every pass, every run was the right one."
Blues boss Hayes, 46, added: "We want to be serial winners. Every team around us is ready to take titles from us so we have to be at our very best — but I wouldn’t want to be in another dressing room!"
Gunners must earn their stripes
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has challenged his side to earn the right to become Premier League champions rather than rely on possible sanctions imposed on Manchester City.
The Gunners sit five points clear of City as Arteta's men prepare to face Brentford tomorrow, with the top two then facing off next Wednesday.
That blockbuster clash will take place in the backdrop of a troubling time for Pep Guardiola’s men after being charged with over 100 alleged financial breaches by the Premier League.
City have denied any wrongdoing but potential points deductions, Premier League expulsion and financial penalties are all said to be on the table as possible punishments if they are found guilty.
But for Arteta, the focus is firmly on matters on the pitch as they bid to deliver their first league title since 2003-04.
The 40-year-old said: "We have to look after our own garden.
"Let’s focus on what we have to do and win enough football matches for that to happen. We have to earn the right to win it, that’s for sure."
Emery warns of wounded City
Unai Emery has warned Aston Villa to expect a wounded Manchester City on Sunday.
The Spanish boss believes Pep Guardiola’s men will be united after accusations of more than 100 alleged breaches of financial rules.
City’s hopes of retaining the title also suffered a blow last weekend after losing 1-0 to Tottenham as they prepare to welcome the 11th-placed Villans to the Etihad.
Emery, 51, said: "I’ve played against Manchester City here and in the Champions League, it’s a very difficult match. Maybe it’s going to be more difficult now with the issues they are having.
"I think they’re going to be together and they are going to try and respond on the pitch against us.
"It’s a very difficult match. Manchester City are building a team to win the Champions League and they are getting close to doing it.
"In the Premier League they have had amazing results over the last few years. Each year it’s Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, and this year it’s Arsenal, to be close to them."
Champions League draw
Chelsea will face holders Lyon in the Women’s Champions League quarter-finals as Arsenal go head-to-head with Bayern Munich in a tough draw for both WSL sides.
The English pair both progressed as group winners but the Blues have been handed a particularly difficult tie against the French giants, who have won the competition a record eight times.
Barcelona or Roma await Emma Hayes’ side if they reach the semi-finals, with the North Londoners on a collision course with the winner of Paris Saint-Germain's clash against Wolfsburg.
The first legs of the quarter-finals will be played on March 21 and 22, with the return fixtures pencilled in for March 29 and 30.
Fors to be reckoned with
Tottenham assistant Cristian Stellini is confident Fraser Forster will be able to step into injured captain Hugo Lloris’ shoes ahead of his extended run between the sticks.
French goalkeeper Lloris has been ruled out for between six and eight weeks with a knee injury.
Former Celtic and Southampton stopper Forster, 34, will take his place ahead of a busy period where Spurs will play in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.
Ahead of Saturday’s league trip to Leicester, Stellini said: "I like Fraser like a man because he is a very good man.
"His behaviour in this season was perfect. Every day he pushes himself to train really hard and with this behaviour he pushes Hugo to train very hard.
"He is a great man before a great goalkeeper because we don’t have to forget we are men before we are players.
"He is a keeper perfect for the Premier League style, for the type of game we are going to play in the Premier League and he uses both feet when he plays with the ball.
"So, it will be interesting to see him for some weeks to play with us. We trust in him, we completely trust in him."
The North Londoners will also be without midfielder Yves Bissouma for a lengthy spell after undergoing surgery to repair a stress fracture on his left ankle.
Scott backs Lionesses for World Cup
Euro 2022 winner Jill Scott is backing England to add the World Cup to their trophy haul this summer.
The 36-year-old brought an end to a glittering career last year, winning her 161st and final cap for the Lionesses in the 2-1 victory over Germany which saw Sarina Wiegman’s side crowned European champions at Wembley.
England will head to the global showpiece in Australia and New Zealand as one of the favourites — and Scott is bullish about her former team-mates’ chances.
Asked whether she will have mixed feelings over having to watch from the sidelines this time, Scott said: "No, not at all.
"I’m so excited for that next generation of players. I don’t have to sit on the fence any more, so I’m going to say England are going to win the World Cup."
Pressed further on whether she genuinely believes the Lionesses can bring home the trophy amid competition from the likes of holders United States and a host of European challengers, Scott added: "Definitely.
"The talent in that squad is incredible. I’ve been so excited watching them and I’m going to be the biggest fan this summer."
