Embarrassing

Jamie Carragher has criticised his old club Liverpool's "embarrassing" summer transfer business.

The Reds could only watch in horror as Chelsea snatched Moises Caicedo from their grasp, while fellow midfield target Romeo Lavia also appears set to pick Stamford Bridge over Anfield.

And Sky Sports pundit Carragher, 45, believes the lack of activity in the market is going to cost Jurgen Klopp's side.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, he said: "They put a bid in for Lavia for £60million when they refused to pay £50m four or five days ago. It's an absolute mess and a joke.

"The biggest problem about it is that Liverpool have known they have needed midfield reinforcements since August of last season, 12 months ago.

"Liverpool have not got big deals over the line and it's been embarrassing."

Robins swoop

Women's Super League newcomers Bristol City have signed Danish striker Amalie Thestrup on a two-year deal.

The former Liverpool ace, 28,  joined West Ham on loan from PSV Eindhoven in January and is looking forward to returning to the English top flight.

She said: "It feels amazing to have signed for Bristol City and I'm extremely excited to get started.

"Getting promoted to back to the WSL is a testament to where the club is going and the ambitions everyone here has, so I think the goal is to establish the team in the top flight and show that's where we belong.

"I've seen what it takes to compete in the WSL and you have to perform at your best every game because every team and every player is so talented."

New deal

Rico Lewis has signed a new five-year deal with Manchester City.

Bury-born Lewis, 18, made 23 appearances with the first team last season as Pep Guardiola's side won the Treble.

He said: "It's been an unbelievable year for me and now to sign this contract is a dream come true.

"As a City fan I can remember watching us winning trophies when I was young and it's the only place I've wanted to be.

"To know I'm going to be here until 2028 is fantastic and I can't wait to keep working and keep improving."

Foxes pick up Casadei

Leicester have agreed a season-long loan for Chelsea starlet Cesare Casadei, subject to EFL approval.

The Italian youth international, 20, said: "I feel really good. I'm really happy to be here, I'm excited and I can't wait to get started.

"Leicester is a big team so I'm here to win and to do as well as possible to fight and to work hard for this team."

Ox moves on

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has joined Besiktas as a free agent.

The versatile midfielder, 30, made 146 appearances and scored 18 times after joining Liverpool from Arsenal in the summer of 2017.

But having helped Jurgen Klopp's side collect six major trophies during his six-year spell at Anfield, Oxlade-Chamberlain's contract was not renewed.

A statement from the club said: "Alex will now continue his career with Besiktas and everyone at Liverpool wishes him good luck at his new club."

Safe hands

Robert Sanchez made his debut as Chelsea recorded a 1-1 draw with Liverpool

Robert Sanchez was the happiest man at Stamford Bridge after being thrown in at the deep end for his Chelsea debut.

Having only joined the Blues from Brighton on August 5, the keeper was thrust into action for Sunday's 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge after it emerged Real Madrid wanted Kepa Arrizabalaga.

And now that Arrizabalaga has joined Real on a season-long loan, Sanchez has an unexpected opportunity to establish himself as Mauricio Pochettino's No1.

Speaking to Chelsea's official website, he said: "It felt amazing to be out there for Chelsea and the fans have welcomed me really well. I want to thank them for the reception.

"You always have to be ready because things can change very quickly. I felt really confident, no nerves at all.

"Since I joined I've felt really welcomed by all the boys and I think we did a good game against Liverpool.

"It was a good start to the season and something for us to build on. We moved the ball well, created some good chances and could have got the win."

Fresh start

Manchester United academy graduate Matej Kovar has joined Bayer Leverkusen on a permanent deal, subject to international clearance.

The Czech goalkeeper's move to the Bundesliga ends his five-and-a-half year stay with United.

Although Kovar, 23, did not make a competitive first-team appearance for United, he featured in two senior friendlies earlier this summer.

A club statement said: "Everyone at Manchester United would like to thank Matej for his service and wish him all the best for the future."
