Milner hails Nunez’s impact

James Milner has backed Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez to be a resounding success at Anfield.

Nunez, 23, netted on his Premier League debut at Fulham after joining for £64million from Benfica over the summer.

And veteran Red Milner has praised his quality and his desire to get on the end of balls in the box.

Milner said: "I think he'll have an impact the whole time he's here, to be honest.

"Since he's been here, he's [been] impressive on the field, worked hard, makes great runs [and] is desperate to put his head on the ball in the box.

"If you put a ball in there, he'll do everything he can to get on the end of it — good finisher, both feet and he's different to the other boys up there.

"We've already got some very exciting attacking players who can cause problems, so he's a great addition. He'll be fantastic for us.

"You want options up there, you want to cause people problems, you want to have options to play different ways because teams are going to watch us and try to stop us, so it's important we can do everything.

"With the options we have up there, I think we have a fantastic mix."

Sterling explains Chelsea move

Chelsea new-boy Raheem Sterling felt he had to leave Manchester City to remain at the top of his game.

The England winger ended his seven-year stint at the Etihad in July, moving to Stamford Bridge for £47.5m.

After being in and out of the City side over the past 18 months, Sterling, 27, was desperate to be a regular starter in the peak of his career.

He said: "As a person, you strive to achieve. I felt my playing time at City was being limited for different reasons and I couldn't afford to waste time. 

"When I look back I didn’t want to see a decline and I want to keep that level. Since the age of 17, I have been a regular starter. 

"But to get to a peak time in my career and to not be playing as regularly was something I didn’t want to accept. I tried to fight and change the scenario but it didn’t come.

"At first, I had a few options but this was the one that was tailor-made for my personal goals. It made a lot of sense for my family and with the direction of the club."

Aguero questions Silva departure

Sergio Aguero has admitted he would be very surprised if Manchester City let Bernardo Silva leave the Etihad.

The 28-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona despite his impressive performances for City as they won the Premier League last term.

This time last year, reports suggested that the Portuguese international was unsettled in Manchester and wanted to move away.

City legend Aguero hailed the midfielder's quality and said if he does move to Barca, he would be an instant success.

Aguero said: "Bernardo is a great player. He carries the ball, he sacrifices, has the quality to assist and score goals and he can play in different positions.

"It would surprise me if City let him go. He is a player who contributes a lot every season, but everything is possible.

"If he finally arrives at Barca, then he will be someone who can be key to the possession game that Xavi likes."

Yorke knows United need 'lift'

Dwight Yorke is confident Manchester United will bring in quality players before the window shuts.

And he is backing Erik ten Hag to guide them back into the Champions League after missing out on qualification for this season’s competition.

The ex-Red Devils forward believes the club’s fanbase requires a boost, having only brought in Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez so far this summer.

They kicked off their campaign with a dismal 2-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford last Sunday and face Brentford this weekend.

Yorke said: "We need a lift and something to happen. A few players have left the club and getting players in does give the team a lift. Not just the team but the fans around the world.

"I am sure the United board is working tirelessly to get players in but it's not easy, you know, especially after not being able to qualify for the Champions League. It could always be a stumbling block for one or two players.

"But United are such a big club and such a big draw that it shouldn't bother them too much. 

“Within a year, we should be qualifying back in the Champions League but we do need more signings to give the place that bit of a facelift and to have a good expectation that the squad is ready to compete for the campaign ahead."

Koulibaly loving new song

Kalidou Koulibaly was delighted after learning of the Chelsea fans' new song for him during his debut victory at Everton.

The summer signing from Napoli played 75 minutes as the Blues battled to a 1-0 win last Saturday.

And he revealed his brother had sent him clips of the travelling faithful singing his name during the match.

Koulibaly said: "I was really happy and when I first heard [the song] I couldn’t believe it. 

"My brother sent it to me on my phone and I was surprised. I was really happy and I want to thank them for this new song, I hope it will be sung for a long time!"

All eyes at Stamford Bridge are now on a big London derby with Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.

Ex-Blues boss Antonio Conte has overseen an impressive summer of business at Spurs, and Koulibaly is expecting a difficult test.

He added: "It’s a big game at home, a London derby and we know it will be a tough game.

"Tottenham are a very good team with a lot of good players, we will work hard to be ready for Sunday to try and win the game. 

"We know it’s going to be difficult, but we’ll be ready!"

Adidas' floating heads

Adidas are floating six-metre high cartoons of Mohamed Salah and Vivianne Miedema above London to celebrate the release of their new boots.

The heads of Liverpool hotshot Salah and Arsenal’s Dutch superstar Miedema mark the release of the X Speedportal boots.

Placed at pitches in Camden, they are a nod to cartoon show Rick and Morty, who combined with adidas for a TV advert involving the two earlier this year.

And adidas say they may appear at other venues across the country as the boot is launched.
