World Cup fear

Arsenal star Leah Williamson dealt England a World Cup injury scare last night when she had to be helped from the pitch against Manchester United. 

Women's Super League leaders United snatched a vital 1-0 win with the final kick of the first half as Alessia Russo finished from 12 yards after being teed up by Nikita Parris. 

The result put them four points clear of champions Chelsea, dealing a major blow to Arsenal's own title push. 

But the Gunners were more concerned that Lionesses skipper Williamson, 26, appeared to have damaged her knee ahead of the first leg of their Champions League semi-final with Wolfsburg on Sunday. 

Boss Jonas Eidevall suggested after the game that it was too early to offer a prognosis but appeared to blame the quality of the pitch at Leigh Sports Village. 

He said: "Of course, it's not good that she had to come off. 

"I have other people connected to the medical information on that at the moment, I haven't seen her yet. 

"I think it's going to continue here with the schedule we have and pitches like that — players are going to get injured. 

"That is something we all need to improve on, the facilities where we play, so we can keep the players on the pitch."

England begin their World Cup campaign in Australia against Haiti on July 22. 

Full of praise

Kevin De Bruyne claimed Erling Haaland underlined his class by scoring the goal that sent Manchester City into the Champions League semi-finals.

Red-hot Haaland, 22, netted his 48th goal of a remarkable campaign as City claimed a 1-1 draw at Bayern Munich last night to advance 4-1 on aggregate.

The visitors had been in control of their destiny after last week's first-leg win but came under considerable pressure before the Norwegian's strike settled matters after 57 minutes.

Having missed from the spot earlier in the game, De Bruyne thought his team-mate showed great character to finish off a swift counter-attack.

He said: "Knowing him he will not be happy with missing the penalty.

"When you have another chance, you have to go again. 

"He had the opportunity, finished it with class and he helps us win games."

Treble chasers

Bernardo Silva is confident Manchester City can do the Treble this season.

Along with battling to retain the Premier League title, Pep Guardiola's side are still in contention to win both the FA Cup and Champions League.

And Silva, 28, believes anything is possible. Speaking to BT Sport, he said: "We struggled until February because we couldn't get in that usual run we had before of winning 10-15 games in a row.

"But now we are very consistent, we feel we have a chance in every competition and we are going for them. 

"We are at that point of the season where if you drop your performance in one game you are out of a competition. 

"It is going to be tough but we are going to work very hard to bring some titles home. 

"Building win after win, that confidence, it is very important and we need to keep it that way."

Running out of time

Ruben Selles admits time is running out for Southampton ahead of a tricky trip to Premier League leaders Arsenal. 

The rock-bottom Saints travel to the Emirates tomorrow four points from safety with seven games to go on the back of a six-match winless streak. 

Spaniard Selles, 39, concedes he has faced an uphill battle since succeeding Nathan Jones in February but retains belief the club can survive. 

He said: "It has been desperate from the very first second. 

"The only thing is we are running out of time and the games are less and less in our account. 

"We put in some good performances but we didn’t transform those into points and hopefully we can change and then start to get some points.

"If we play our game and put in the performance we need, we have options to win the game. 

"We have a good team in front [of us] but almost every week we play good teams."

Show no fear

Dean Smith has urged Leicester to play without fear against Wolves as they battle to preserve their Premier League status. 

The Foxes welcome Julen Lopetegui's men to the King Power on Saturday sitting second bottom and two points from safety.

They also go to fellow strugglers Leeds on Tuesday before hosting Everton on May 1 in a crucial spell and Smith insists his new side need to be brave.

The Leicester boss, 52, said: "We can't play with any fear. 

"We've looked at the quality we have on the training ground, we haven't brought that onto the pitch over the last eight or nine games.

"Everyone knows how important this fixture is. Our results at home haven't been where they should be."
