High praise

Enzo Fernandez has thanked Frank Lampard for describing him as a future leader ahead of Chelsea's crucial Champions League showdown with Real Madrid tonight. 

January signing Fernandez, 22, will be a key figure as Lampard's men look to pick up a positive result to take back to Stamford Bridge for the second leg of their quarter-final next week. 

And the Argentine World Cup winner is clearly enjoying working under caretaker boss Lamps. 

He said: "I always dreamed of being a leader for a big club. 

"My roots, when I started playing football, was always to be an example to others and to try and be a leader.

"I think I am a player and a person that is always there for his team-mates and to be defined as a leader by Frank, despite being so young, makes me really proud.

"I would like to thank Frank for his kind words. I will always try to give the best of myself for the team and that will be no different against Real Madrid."

Taming of the Lionesses

Leah Williamson admits last night's defeat to Australia left England feeling rubbish.

The Lionesses saw their proud undefeated streak under boss Sarina Wiegman come to an end at Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium as goals from Sam Kerr and Charlotte Grant handed the Matildas a 2-0 win. 

And Williamson, 26, was particularly glum after her mistake led to Kerr's opener before Grant's header deflected in off her. 

The England skipper said: "The whole team feels really rubbish about losing. It hurts.

"We looked like we lacked ideas on the ball and we got punished. 

"It was my mistake for the first goal and they were ruthless on the counter. 

"Sometimes in football you have those games. We weren't as efficient as we usually are and we need to figure out why."

The defeat to Australia was the first time Wiegman's side had been beaten in 31 games. 

Base camp

England have secured their first base camp in Australia ahead of this summer's World Cup. 

The Lionesses will train at Queensland's Sunshine Coast Stadium and stay at the Novotel Sunshine Coast Resort after arriving Down Under on July 7. 

Boss Sarina Wiegman said: "We can't wait to get out to Australia. 

"It is great we know where we will continue our World Cup preparations and we are very happy to have this perfect combination of training ground and hotel. 

"The work we do in the last weeks before the tournament will be essential for making sure we get off to a good start on July 22 [against Haiti]. 

"I was very impressed with what I saw when I visited Sunshine Coast. We will have everything we need on the pitch, as well as high performance gym and recovery facilities. 

"We had such a warm welcome from all the people there, which is also important. 

"I know everyone will be behind the host nation but we felt Sunshine Coast will feel like a home away from home for us."

Merricks moves on

Brighton assistant boss Amy Merricks has left the Women's Super League side to become head coach of England's Under-19s side. 

Merricks said: "I am incredibly excited. It is an absolute honour to represent my country and join the England pathway.

"I have had a fantastic experience at Brighton. I have been with the club for eight years, starting with the U-13s and the reserves, progressing to the women's first team. 

"That has been a journey in itself but the time has come to take on a new challenge. The positive experiences and challenges I have had along the way are going to hold me in great stead going forward. 

"With the progress the England senior team have made under Sarina Wiegman, it is important we support that winning culture across the age groups so that players can be prepared to compete on the world stage.

"I'm looking forward to bringing knowledge and experience of developing individuals and teams domestically to ensure we continue to develop exciting young talent to play a part in the Lionesses thriving."

Wilder statement

Watford have announced Chris Wilder will remain as manager until at least the end of the season — quashing speculation he was set to be sacked after just 36 days in charge. 

It had been reported that Wilder, 55, was going to be the latest managerial casualty at Vicarage Road, with Italian Francesco Farioli named as his successor. 

But Watford's technical director Ben Manga said: "The speculation is totally disrespectful to Chris and his staff. 

"As Chris has said after recent games, we are all fully focused on ending the season strongly and pushing as hard as we can while there's still a chance of making the play-offs."

Watford have built a reputation as a hire-and-fire club in recent seasons, with Wilder their fourth boss in under a year.

The Hornets are without a win in four games and sit 12th in the Championship — six points off the play-off places.
