Match rescheduled

The abandoned match between Eredivisie rivals Ajax and Feyenoord will resume behind closed doors at 2pm local time on Wednesday, the Dutch FA have confirmed.

Champions Feyenoord led 3-0 at the Johan Cruyff Arena when proceedings were halted on 56 minutes after fans threw fireworks onto the pitch.

Ajax had a game against FC Volendam scheduled for Wednesday but that has now been postponed until further notice.

The Amsterdam-based club disagree with the decision to finish the Feyenoord match on Wednesday over fixture congestion issues — and they are considering legal action.

Ajax wrote in a statement: "The competition and cup program is now being adjusted by the KNVB for four clubs due to the completion of an abandoned match. 

"Not only the clubs, but also the supporters are victims of this."

In their own statement, the Dutch FA said: "The basic principle is that the competition must be as fair as possible and that a match should therefore preferably be decided on the field. 

"The match must then be resumed as soon as possible."

Brighton reunion

Roberto De Zerbi is looking forward to reuniting with Moises Caicedo and Robert Sanchez when Brighton travel to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup tomorrow.

The duo left the Amex for West London this summer, with Caicedo moving for a Premier League record fee of £115million.

De Zerbi said: "I am looking forward to seeing them and always happy to meet my former players. 

"Now they don't play with us, but I will hug them with pleasure."

De Zerbi also cast doubt on Evan Ferguson's involvement after the striker was withdrawn at half-time against Bournemouth last weekend.

The Italian boss added: "I have not decided about Evan yet. I would like him to play at his best. 

"He wasn't in his best physical condition on Sunday but he wanted to play.

The threads that bind

Roma have released their third kit for the 2023-24 season.

The sleek, black jersey is said to combine modern football fashion with the ancient allure of Rome as a city.

Late designer Piero Gratton's Lupetto symbol features on the front, this time in black inside a white circle with yellow and red borders.

And the iconic adidas three stripes logo on the shoulder is made up of Roma's three historical colours, yellow, orange and red.

The new kit is available to purchase from official adidas stores and online.

Big Dunc's back

Duncan Ferguson has been appointed manager of Scottish Championship side Inverness on a three-year deal.

The 51-year-old had a brief stint in charge of Forest Green before leaving on July 4, winning just one of his 18 games.

He faces a tough assignment at Inverness as the club are currently rock bottom of the Championship table with five defeats from their opening six games.

Ferguson began his coaching career at Everton and took the interim manager role there on two occasions, in 2019 and 2022.

He left the Toffees in July 2022 after spending time as a first-team coach under Frank Lampard.

Moore the merrier

New Huddersfield manager Darren Moore was full of praise for his team after their 1-1 draw with Coventry on Monday night.

The Terriers were staring down the barrel of defeat after Yasin Ayari's first-half opener but centre-back Michal Helik rescued a point with a 94th-minute equaliser.

Ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Moore said: "It's been an incredible few days getting into the club and working with the boys.

"They have taken a lot of information in over the past couple of days. The fighting spirit was incredible and they got their just rewards and something out of the game at the end.

"I'm really pleased with the boys and their second-half performance. 

"I've seen enough there and there's enough quality in the team to get more out of the players and I'll look forward to working with the boys over the next couple of weeks."

Moore will take charge of his first home match when Huddersfield host high-flying Ipswich on Saturday.

Alonso love

Carlo Ancelotti heaped praise on Xabi Alonso amid reports linking the Bayer Leverkusen boss with the Real Madrid job.

Alonso took charge of the Bundesliga outfit in October 2022 and his work this season has seen Die Werkself rise to second in the table, behind Bayern Munich on goal difference.

Ahead of Real's match against Las Palmas tomorrow, Ancelotti said: "I have coached Xabi, he's doing a great job at Bayer. 

"He understands the game well, that's why he's a very good coach. 

"I wish Alonso, Raul, Alvaro Arbeloa to become Real Madrid's manager one day. I love all of them."
