Roo's rallying cry

Wayne Rooney admitted his Birmingham players need to adapt to his style quickly after their 2-0 loss to Hull on Wednesday evening.

Goals from Liam Delap and Jaden Philogene secured three points for the Tigers and condemned Rooney to a second consecutive loss since taking over from John Eustace.

The Blues boss said: "You need to be brave in taking the ball, but it's clear from the first two games that the players aren't comfortable doing that.

"So there will be slight adjustments of course because we need to pick up points as well.

"I can get players up the pitch, boot the ball up the pitch and look to pick up second balls, but we need to get the balance right.

"This is on me — maybe I've asked them to do too much and I take that responsibility. We're asking them to play out from the back and be more front-footed."

Joey Barton has been sacked by Bristol Rovers after a disappointing run of results which sees them 16th in the League One table.

A club statement read: “Bristol Rovers can confirm that the club has relieved first-team manager Joey Barton of his duties.

"Everyone at the club would like to thank Joey for all his efforts and wish him well in the future."

First-team coach Andy Mangan will take interim charge of Rovers, with support from fellow coaches Glenn Whelan, Danny Ventre and Anssi Jaakkola.

New balls please

Mitre's new designs have been created with football culture in mind
Mitre's new designs have been created with football culture in mind

Mitre have unveiled new match balls for the FA Cup and Women's FA Cup after extending their partnership with the FA for another three years.

The Ultimax Pro Football is a modern take on the classic 90s design, with detailed geometric patterns inspired by fans' scarves and flags on matchdays.

Stephen Hutchison, the FA's head of commercial partnerships, said: "We've really valued this relationship with Mitre since they came on board, so we’re very happy to extend our partnership.

"Mitre share the desire for our competitions to maintain the highest standards and their track record as football suppliers to both the game in England historically and us throughout this period has been outstanding."

New situation

Thiago Silva says the current situation at Chelsea is different than anything else he has experienced in his career.

The 39-year-old centre-back is the senior figure in one of Europe's youngest squads and has seen big changes at Stamford Bridge since joining from Paris Saint-Germain in August 2020.

He said: "When I joined here, the team was already assembled and despite some bad results things then started going well, and now I'm in a totally new situation.

"There are really young players here.

"I'm the oldest player in the team, and I think the league as a whole, and I think Chelsea have the youngest team in the Premier League.

"Many of our players weren't playing in the Premier League before, many came from different leagues, so they had to bed in as well."

Reds promise

Jurgen Klopp has praised Liverpool's impressive start to the season but is well aware bigger tests lie ahead.

The Reds are fourth in the Premier League with six wins from nine fixtures and are unbeaten in the Europa League.

Ahead of tonight's match against Toulouse, the German boss said: "We are doing things step by step and this means being patient, working hard and having a clear idea of what kind of team we are looking to become.

"That we have managed to start pretty well in the Premier League and the Europa League while this work is taking place is undoubtedly a positive but we cannot lose sight of the need to turn promise into something more substantial.

"There are never any shortcuts and experience tells us that there will be times when we have to suffer as we try to reach whatever our destination might be."

Emi loves Europe

Emiliano Martinez says the Europa Conference League is "massive" for Unai Emery's high-flying Aston Villa ahead of tonight's match against AZ Alkmaar.

The Villans have enjoyed a superb start to the Premier League season, sitting fifth on 19 points after nine rounds of matches.

Villa's Conference League campaign got off to a poor start when they lost 3-2 at Legia Warsaw but Martinez says his side are better prepared for the AZ test.

He said: "It's massive. It's a European competition, I know it's new but we know how difficult it is.

"We played Legia away, we lost, it was a shock, everyone expected us to win so we learned from that game.

"And we expect a big game, big atmosphere tomorrow and we are more prepared than [we were against] Legia.

"AZ, we know how strong they are. They were in the semi-finals last season, they like to play out from the back.

"They're a strong side. It will be a good test, but we are up for it."

Burnley striker Lyle Foster has committed his future to the Clarets by signing a new five-year contract.

The deal will run until 2028 and is just reward for the 23-year-old's fine start to the season.

Foster has contributed to five of Burnley's seven goals in the Premier League this term, scoring three and assisting two.

The 13-cap South Africa international was signed from Westerlo last January and has quickly earned the trust of manager Vincent Kompany.
