Coufal backs Rice

West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal has backed former team-mate Declan Rice to win a trophy with Arsenal this season, despite their Carabao Cup defeat to the Hammers.

David Moyes' side won 3-1 thanks to an own goal from Ben White and strikes from Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen but Coufal is still confident the Gunners — and their marquee summer signing — can lift silverware.

The Czech full-back said: "I think they'll win something for sure. They've won the Community Shield already, so he [Rice] already has a trophy with Arsenal. I think they're not too disappointed to lose this game.

"It was something special, to see him on the other side of the pitch. He's doing an incredible job for Arsenal, even better than he did for us.

"He's an unbelievable player. It was strange to see him in different colours but we wish him all the best. He came into our changing room to say hello and see how we are."

Steele signs

Jason Steele has committed his future to Brighton by signing a new contract which runs until June 2026.

The 33-year-old has played an increasingly pivotal role in Roberto De Zerbi's side in recent months, starting nine matches across all competitions this season.

De Zerbi said: "I'm very pleased for Jason. He's a great player."

Technical director David Weir added: "Jason is a key player for us, on and off the pitch. His attitude, leadership and what he brings to this club every day has been a massive part of our progress throughout his time here.

"I am thrilled that his loyalty and patience is now paying off."

Troubled Ten Hag

Gary Neville believes Erik ten Hag has some serious thinking to do after Manchester United's 3-0 loss to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

The Red Devils were humbled at Old Trafford in a repeat of last season's final, with Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock grabbing the goals to secure a well-deserved victory for Eddie Howe's visitors.

United have lost eight of their 15 matches in all competitions this season ahead of their Premier League trip to Fulham on Saturday.

Ex-United defender Neville said: "In terms of team selection, in terms of style of play, in terms of how Ten Hag lifts them ahead of the weekend, I'm not quite sure.

"Because the Manchester derby on Sunday was bad and tonight just cemented what we've seen in the last few days.

"He's got some thinking to do. He's got to work out how to get the best out of this group of players very quickly."

Muller's fury

Thomas Muller slammed his Bayern Munich team-mates after their shock DFB-Pokal second-round exit to third-tier outfit FC Saarbrucken on Wednesday evening.

Muller scored to put the German champions 1-0 ahead but the hosts pulled off an extraordinary comeback, completed by a 96th-minute winner from Marcel Gaus.

After the game, Muller was one of a select few players to speak to the Bayern fans who had travelled — and he labelled the behaviour of those colleagues who did not as "unacceptable".

He said: "As is so often the case, the fans care more about just the result and the game. In football, you can lose a game. I have to agree with the fans.

"What's not acceptable at all is that only three or four players end up understanding how to respect the supporters. The least you can do is to give something back. 

"It's about showing respect. We also discussed this once in the dressing room. Of course it's unacceptable."

Henri's recovery

Former Arsenal youngster Henri Lansbury has revealed he overcame testicular cancer while playing for Nottingham Forest.

He moved to the City Ground in 2012 and was then diagnosed in 2016, just a year before his switch to Aston Villa.

Lansbury, 33, said: "I was in the shower after training one day, I was having a feel and it was a lump. It was a pea-size lump and over time I thought it would go away. A couple of months past and it was still there.

"First of all, I went down to the local hospital to see if I could get it checked out. They said the lead time was a few weeks and I didn't want to go away with it, so I had to phone the club and ask for help.

"They put me in contact with someone to get it checked out. I had a scan there, they said they'd give me my results back in a bit and as I left to get in my car, the doctor at Forest called me to say, 'can you pack your bag, you're going back in for your operation tonight'."
