Props from Klopp

Jurgen Klopp insists he has never experienced anything like 10-man Liverpool's dramatic comeback win at Newcastle in his long managerial career.

The Reds found themselves 1-0 down and without their captain Virgil van Dijk after the Dutchman was sent off for a foul on Alexander Isak in the first half.

But the 2019 Champions League winners found a way to get themselves back into the game through substitute Darwin Nunez, who then bagged a stoppage-time winner.

Klopp was left stunned but delighted after the match, saying: "In my more than 1,000 games as a coach, I never had a game like this, that is the truth.

"There have been other games, but with 10 men in an atmosphere like this against an opponent like this, I'm pretty sure it never happened because these moments are rare and super-special.

"I thought the boys deserved it today because with 10 men, we played better and gave Newcastle a proper game.

"Three things were clear at half-time — Trent [Alexander-Arnold] cannot get another yellow card, we cannot concede a second and if that happens we have a chance, and that's what the boys obviously did."

Yamal's potential

Lamine Yamal is gaining the trust of Xavi at just 16
Lamine Yamal is gaining the trust of Xavi at just 16

Barcelona head coach Xavi hailed the role Lamine Yamal played in the comeback victory over Villarreal at the weekend.

Yamal, 16, grabbed two assists as the LaLiga champions won 4-3 and the former midfielder could not help but rave about the latest La Masia talent.

He said: "Expectations are very high, and more because of what you can see. In the end, he starts as a starter not because of the coach's whim, but because we see him capable of making a difference.

"He is a differential player, he is smart, he chooses well and most importantly in football, the decision-making is almost always the correct one, which is the most important thing for a football player.

"Lamine Yamal‘s decision-making is almost always the correct and good choice, and many times it is the best at 16 years of age.

"What I do hope is that he spends many years here, at Can Barca, because he is a footballer to mark an era."

Neville sends warning

Manchester United fought from behind to beat Nottingham Forest
Manchester United fought from behind to beat Nottingham Forest

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has warned the club that they must act in the transfer window this week if they are to keep up with the top four this season.

The Red Devils fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday and looked far from convincing again.

Neville said: "You always feel under Ten Hag, they're not fluid at all at this stage of the season. They're always scruffy the first few weeks.

"I think they have to try to do something in the transfer market this week, they need to get players out.

"They've got players in better this summer. There's no doubt they want another player or two. A left-back and central midfield player.

"I think they need that or else they'll be put under real pressure."

Mancini signs for Saudi

Roberto Mancini has been appointed the manager of Saudi Arabia's national team.

The 58-year-old has signed a four-year deal following his resignation as Italy head coach earlier this month.

On his new role, the Italian said: "I am immensely honoured to be offered the position as Saudi Arabia national team manager.

"I believe this is a great opportunity for me to experience football in a new country, especially with the growing popularity of football in Asia.

"I firmly believe that the passionate footballing culture of Saudi Arabia and the intrinsic quality of Saudi players are crucial ingredients for success.

"The presence of top players in the Saudi Pro League indicates the potential for growth in the national football scene."

Mancini's new side take on Costa Rica on September 8 before another friendly against South Korea four days later.

Feeling the heat

Juanma Lillo picked up a win in the absence of Pep Guardiola
Juanma Lillo picked up a win in the absence of Pep Guardiola

Assistant boss Juanma Lillo admitted he did not enjoy standing in for Pep Guardiola after Manchester City’s hard-fought 2-1 win at Sheffield United.

The Premier League champions looked to have been undone by the Blades after Jayden Bogle scored in the 85th minute to make it 1-1 but Rodri stepped up with another important goal for his club a few minutes later.

And Lillo was quick to deny any enjoyment in his role with Guardiola still recovering from back surgery.

He said: "I much prefer being with Pep. Especially when it's a question of health, I don't enjoy this at all. We miss his presence now more than ever.

"During the match, I spoke to him at some moments, but generally he was speaking to the other members of the technical staff. But he's been totally present today.

"Generally I thought we played really well today, it was a lot closer to what we wanted.

"We were able to find the new spaces created from winning the ball back quicker and we could have scored more before the first goal went in."

Counting Cash

Matty Cash earned praise from Unai Emery this weekend

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has praised Matty Cash after the Polish international scored a brace in the club's 3-1 win over Burnley on Sunday.

There was speculation Cash could be on his way out of Villa Park this summer but the 26-year-old showed what an asset he can be with two goals in the opening 20 minutes of his 100th Villa appearance.

He replaced Leon Bailey as a right winger for the game and Emery was delighted he was able to step up to the plate.

He said: "He's versatile, he played before as a winger, he's playing with us in a back four sometimes, sometimes lower, but we used him in pre-season playing higher, as a winger.

"He helped us a lot today defensively and offensively and then he used the moment to remember when he played more at Nottingham Forest as a winger.

"His two goals were a good example for us but we know he can be versatile."
