The five most successful English clubs in history

Liverpool lifted the Carabao Cup for the second time in three seasons thanks to a 1-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday.

Virgil van Dijk's 118th-minute header secured a dramatic victory for the Reds at Wembley, who in the end were reliant on a number of academy products due to their lengthy injury list.

Jurgen Klopp has now won eight trophies since arriving at Anfield in October 2015 helping Liverpool climb the all-time list.

We run the rule over the five English sides who have lifted the most silverware.

1= Liverpool — 67 major trophies*

Liverpool have now won the League Cup a record 10 times following their latest triumph.

The Reds have also lifted the FA Cup eight times, as well as winning the top flight on 19 occasions.

But undoubtedly Liverpool's most impressive shelf in their silverware cabinet is the one reserved for European accolades.

The Merseysiders have won an impressive six European Cups — two in the Champions League era — and scooped three UEFA Cups, now the Europa League.

1= Manchester United — 67 major trophies

Manchester United were the first English side to win the European Cup way back in 1967-68 before triumphing again in 1998-99 — part of a historic Treble — and 2007-08.

The Red Devils' three European crowns sit alongside a record 20 top-flight titles, with 13 of them coming in the Premier League era.

United have won 12 FA Cups and also boast six League Cup final victories — including last season's 2-0 win over Newcastle at Wembley.

3. Arsenal — 48 major trophies

The vast majority of Arsenal's success has been achieved domestically, as they have yet to lift a European trophy since the 1993-94 Cup Winners' Cup.

However, the Gunners lead the way in terms of FA Cup victories with 14 and seven of them have come since the turn of the century.

Arsenal have also won the title 13 times and remain the only team in the Premier League era to go through an entire season unbeaten, achieving the historic feat in 2003-04.

4. Manchester City — 34 major trophies

Much of Manchester City's success has come since a change of ownership — with Sheikh Mansour taking the reins in September 2008.

Seven of City's nine top-flight crowns came in the previous 12 years with last season's triumph helping them become the only other English side, along with rivals United, to win the Treble.

Current boss Pep Guardiola has guided the Citizens to 16 of their 34 pieces of silverware and is now aiming to become the first manager in history to emerge victorious in four consecutive top-flight title races.

5. Chelsea — 32 major trophies

A hefty chunk of Chelsea's success has come in the years since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's takeover of the club in June 2003.

The former owner oversaw an era in which the Blues won two Champions Leagues, two Europa Leagues, five Premier League titles, five FA Cups and three League Cups.

Jose Mourinho was in charge for seven of those triumphs — making him the most successful manager in Chelsea's history.
