The most successful clubs in FA Cup history

Plenty of teams have written themselves into the history books by winning football's oldest trophy over the years. 

But what fanbase can boast that they have lifted the FA Cup more than anybody else?

6= Aston Villa (seven wins, four-time runners-up)

Aston Villa's last FA Cup triumph came over 60 years ago but the Villans remain one of the competition's most successful sides.

The Birmingham outfit have not won this side of the 21st century, having last come out on top in 1957 by beating Manchester United at Wembley.

Villa's six other wins all came between 1887 and 1920 having been one of English football's original powerhouses.

6= Manchester City (seven wins, five-time runners up)

Manchester City lifted the trophy four times between 1904 and 1969 but it is since their takeover by Abu Dhabi owners in 2008 that their fortunes have really thrived.

Yaya Toure scored the winner against Stoke in 2011 before Pep Guardiola guided City to two further triumphs in 2019 and most recently in 2023.

Ilkay Gundogan's brace helped the Citizens overcome fierce rivals Manchester United en route to the club's first Treble.

3= Tottenham (eight wins, one-time runners-up)

Tottenham boast a brilliant haul of eight trophies from nine finals, with their only defeat a 3-2 loss to Coventry in 1987.

Spurs first took home the famous Cup in 1901 and enjoyed back-to-back victories in both the early 60s and 80s.

They last went all the way in 1991 and will be desperate for another triumph to end their current trophy drought.

3= Liverpool (eight wins, seven-time runners-up)

For all their success in domestic and European football, Liverpool's FA Cup record is somewhat underwhelming.

Jurgen Klopp's side ended a 16-year wait for the prestigious trophy in 2022 however, winning a penalty shootout against Chelsea.

That was the Reds' eighth success, while they have also fallen at the final hurdle on seven occasions.

3= Chelsea (eight wins, eight-time runners-up)

At the start of the 1996-97 season, Chelsea's FA Cup record stood as one-time champions and three-time beaten finalists.

But the Blues won two more before incredibly coming out on top five times in 11 years between 2007 and 2018, largely thanks to a certain Roman Abramovich.

They last won the competition in 2018 — beating Manchester United 1-0 in the final — but lost their last three appearances in the showpiece in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

2. Manchester United (12 wins, nine-time runners-up)

United unsurprisingly feature high up in this list but for once do not come out on top.

Legendary boss Alex Ferguson accounted for five of their 12 triumphs, with two coming from another iconic figure in Matt Busby.

The Red Devils last won in 2016 and have been beaten in four of their last five finals.

1. Arsenal (14 wins, seven-time runners-up)

Reaching a staggering 21 finals, Arsenal are the undisputed kings of football's longest-running competition.

Their first visit to the showpiece in 1927 resulted in a controversial defeat to Cardiff — still the only time the FA Cup has left England.

The Gunners enjoyed regular victories down the years but it was under Arsene Wenger, the competition's most successful manager with seven triumphs, that they really took off.
