Poppy Pattinson reckons England face the "ultimate test" against Spain in their first Women's World Cup final on Sunday.

The Brighton and England Under-23s defender has been keenly following the Lionesses' progress Down Under and is backing them to bring the trophy home.

But she admits Spain will present a formidable challenge in Sydney as Sarina Wiegman's Euro 2022 winners bid to enjoy back-to-back success at major tournaments.

Speaking exclusively to LiveScore, Pattinson said: "I think Spain are going to be the ultimate test.

"So many teams have been strong in this World Cup. They all pose a different question and Spain will do that against England in the final.

"There are some top talents in their team and the atmosphere will add to the occasion as well. It will be the toughest game but also one the girls can be excited for."

Tough decisions

Wiegman faces a selection headache ahead of the clash, with star player Lauren James returning from a two-game suspension.

The Dutch coach, 53, must now decide whether to reintroduce the Chelsea ace or stick with semi-final goal hero Ella Toone.

Pattinson, 23, added: "It's not an easy decision. The squad is huge with a lot of depth and everyone adds something different.

"Both Lauren and Ella bring something different to the table and it will depend on what Sarina wants on the day — but I wouldn't rule out a Lauren James winner."

Narrow favourites

Though Pattinson is expecting a close contest, she believes the Lionesses are destined to come out on top.

She said: "I think it will be a very tight game. But off the back of the Euros, England have got to be favourites.

"Spain will come into it fighting but I believe in the girls and hopefully they can bring it home.

"The girls can take confidence from last summer. It's a high-pressure game but things have grown so much that I think every game in women's football is a big one now.

"If they play like they did against Australia, they stand a very good chance of winning."

Poppy Pattinson was speaking after a McDonald's screening in Nottingham of England's World Cup semi-final win over Australia. McDonald's is showing up for football fans this summer as the official restaurant sponsor of the Women's World Cup 2023.
