Megan Finnigan is confident Everton will bounce back from their Manchester United mauling by beating Tottenham on Sunday.

The Toffees were stunned 5-0 on home turf by the Red Devils before the international break, checking the momentum gained by an impressive win over Liverpool at Anfield a week earlier.

It leaves the Merseysiders with just three points from four Women's Super League outings this term — a tally Finnigan is determined to add to rapidly.

Speaking to LiveScore, the Everton skipper said: "It was a difficult one against United because we've had a lot of girls go on international duty straight after.

"I know we've all reflected on it individually because it was individual mistakes that cost us. But we can't afford to dwell.

"We're straight back into it with what is a huge game against Spurs. They've been on a good run of form but it's a team I look at and see weaknesses we can expose.

"If we perform as we did in the derby, which was our best performance so far, I'm confident we can go and get a massive three points."

Finnigan, 25, was handed the armband by Brian Sorensen during the summer after Gabby George joined Manchester United.

Having previously captained England at youth level, it is a role the academy graduate is embracing.

She added: "It was a proud moment for me. There's a lot more responsibility on my shoulders now but I've tried not to change too much.

"It's a learning process. I'm not going to get things right all the time but I just try to be a good influence and help the team."

The move was a show of faith by Danish coach Sorensen, who Finnigan believes is steering the Toffees down a positive path.

She said: "I'm very confident [with Sorensen in charge]. We have a clear identity in how we play and we don't stray away from it because of results.

"Last season it took us a while to get used to it but eventually we looked really comfortable and got some great results.

"We've got a few new faces who are getting used to the style but I think it will really click for us once things settle."

England dream

Centre-back Finnigan was a regular for England at youth level but has yet to win a senior cap for the Lionesses.

However, she has not given up on breaking into Sarina Wiegman's squad — and has taken encouragement from some of her fellow WSL stars.

She said: "There'll always be hope. It's something I've not managed to do since leaving the age groups but everyone's journey is different.

"I look at players like Laura Coombs who has been called up by Sarina in her late 20s due to her impressive form.

"But my priority has been Everton and that's what I focus on now.

"I'd have to be playing well at club level to get a call-up anyway so that's where my focus is. Beyond that, who knows?"
