England can go one better than the heroes of 2009 and win Women's Euro 2022, according to former star defender Faye White.

The 90-cap international captained her country to the final 13 years ago but suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Germany.

And White believes the way Sarina Wiegman's Lionesses clawed their way back from a goal behind to earn a quarter-final victory against Spain — thanks to a decisive Georgia Stanway screamer — proves they have the mettle to triumph on home soil.

She told LiveScore: "What a game and what a winning goal.

"The knockout games really show the resolve of a team, and I think we needed a test, so coming back against a team like Spain, who were the tournament favourites, should give the players a lot of confidence going into the semi-finals.

"Now going forward, it’s always going to be that calibre of team, and ultimately they’ll need to get through possible setbacks to win the tournament.

"Because of the depth, because of the way they have performed and now they showed they can dig deep and bounce back from a setback, I’m backing them all the way.

"There’s still a long way to go and hurdles to go over, but we are in a fortunate position to be the host nation and I think having an extra day’s rest thanks to the scheduling will definitely play a part."

England boss Wiegman knows exactly what it takes to win the Euros after leading the Netherlands to glory in 2017.

And White hailed the Dutch coach's tactical nous and bravery for making big calls, like taking off Lionesses talisman Ellen White against Spain.

She explained: "It takes a lot of courage to take off England’s highest scorer of all time.

"Sarina showed she will make the hard calls, and it gave the players coming on confidence, but also gives the game that extra injection with a player who is harder to handle and more impactful.

"She showed a masterclass and just how vital she was on the touchline. You can see every player in the squad knows their position and knows their role within the team — it just shows the belief she gives these players."

Sweden take on surprise package Belgium tonight for the right to face England, with Germany potentially lying in wait in the final after their win over Austria.

White added: "I think Sweden will make it to the semi-finals and be England's opponents.

"If you look at their squad they have a good balance of young talent and experienced players — and made it to the Olympic final don’t forget.

"And you can’t rule out Germany either to get to the final from the other side of the draw, they have such efficiency and showed how good they are against Spain with a convincing victory. It’s exciting that we’re up there in that calibre of team."
