Greenwood confident Lionesses can roar Down Under despite slow start

England and Manchester United fan Al Greenwood is confident the Lionesses can still go all the way at the Women's World Cup despite their slow start against Haiti.

Greenwood, drummer for English rock band Sports Team, believes there are positives that boss Sarina Wiegman can take from their opener in Brisbane and insists that results are all that matter in tournament football.

She said: "I think there was that massive hope that Haiti would be the watershed, that we would get a good four or five goals and kick-start the campaign.

"But there was a caginess in the middle, we didn't look able to create opportunities and play through the middle in the way that you'd hoped. And then there was the finishing, we are still lacking a goal from open play in 367 minutes.

"So there are definite concerns. Particularly at the back, there was a lot of shakiness. Millie Bright — a captain coming back after injury — didn't look fresh on her feet and as on the ball.

"However, I think you also have to look at the reality, which is that it's tournament football. We saw last year at the opening game of the Euros, it was not a triumphant victory but ultimately we got the three points."

Greenwood is part of Hope FC alongside the likes of Melanie C, Self Esteem and Wolf Alice lead singer Ellie Rowsell.

The musical squad of 11 stars have released their World Cup song Call Me A Lioness to raise money for charity partners Football Beyond Borders, Street Soccer London, Girls United and Manchester Laces.

As well as helping the quartet of good causes, Greenwood hopes it will be a summer to remember for women's football.

She added: "We're seeing the gap within the women's game close, which is to be celebrated.

"But hopefully as the tournament progresses, it'll be that depth and the strength that we have on the bench that will enable us to really push on.

"We've got so much talent and depth on the bench which is something that I think is going to come into its own.

"You saw the likes of [Rachel] Daly and Lauren James absolutely transforming the play, opening things up, offering more opportunities.

"I think it's going to be a long campaign and what's far more important is trying out things and maintaining a system and building momentum and I think hopefully that's what we can do."

The Lionesses continue their campaign Down Under against Denmark on Friday and a win could see them clinch qualification to the knockout stages.
