Draw is not so sweet for Toffees defender Tarkowski

James Tarkowski was disappointed to see Everton come away with just a point against Crystal Palace. 

On a forgettable evening at Goodison Park, the visitors appeared to be on their way to a much-needed victory when Jordan Ayew opened the scoring after 66 minutes. 

The Toffees pushed hard for an equaliser but had to wait until six minutes from time when sub Amadou Onana headed home from a corner. 

And it was set-pieces that Tarkowski claimed the hosts should have done more with, even though the 1-1 draw dragged them out the Premier League drop zone. 

Speaking to Sky Sports, the centre-back, 31, said: "After being 1-0 down, we would have taken it [the point]. 

"Set-pieces were important but I would have liked to score more from them. Disappointed with it but we will take the point."

Having played his part in the equaliser, Tarkowski added: "We work on it a fair bit and it is always an opportunity when we get in the box. 

"We have lads that get themselves in good areas and we just attack it. 

"I told Amadou I was going to get in the way of a man to make more space so he could get his head on it."

New Palace boss Oliver Glasner, appointed earlier today after Roy Hodgson announced he was standing down, was treated to a dire opening 45 minutes as he watched from the stands.

He is likely to have taken heart from Ayew's fine strike, which was only the Ghana forward's third league goal of the season. 

But Ayew and Co will have shared Tarkowski's disappointment with the result after going into the game with the intention of delivering a send-off Hodgson would have been proud of. 

Ahead of the game, Eagles skipper Joel Ward said: "Our thoughts go out to the gaffer. 

"We're very fond of him and he's given us so much over the years. We want to wish him all the best and good health."

Glasner, 49, will be hoping his Eagles can fly a little higher when he takes to the dugout for the visit of Burnley on Saturday.
